Wilson Harper set out to learn KiCad and ended up with a battery-free PCB business card that lights up 21 LEDs when tapped against a phone, powered entirely by harvested NFC energy.

The card pairs an NXP NTAG I2C Plus, which routes excess DC voltage out to external hardware, with a 3mm x 3mm ATtiny816 chosen for its QFN package and 17 GPIOs. Six of those pins drive 20 Charlieplexed LEDs plus a simple indicator LED.

The rectangular spiral antenna fills the whole card and was sized with STMicro’s inductance calculator to land near 2.75uH for resonance at 13.56MHz, generated by a KiCad Python script included in the repo since no existing plug-in could make the shape. Routing avoided a closed loop, and a ground plane, so eddy currents would not kill the antenna, and all traces are mirrored onto the back silkscreen alongside a block diagram and BOM.

Three exposed pads on the back at breadboard spacing allow programming over UPDI with a pogo pin clip, with a TVS diode protecting the MCU from wallet static. After a Pico-based programmer failed to produce any signal on the scope, an Adafruit UPDI Friend worked instantly. The main loop is bare-metal C at 1MHz to minimize flicker, the tag was written with NXP TagWriter, and thirty RoHS-compliant, credit-card-thin boards were ordered from JLCPCB. A second version is under consideration with different LED colors and maybe a button or two for arcade-style games.

Last spring, MIT physics graduate student Manu Srivastava got an email from six high school students in India he’d never met. They were entering Beamline for Schools — an international competition that lets secondary students run experiments on particle accelerator beams — and needed a mentor. He usually declines such requests, which typically arrive through companies charging families for access to scientists. This one came straight from the students, so he said yes. Team attoPION was one of five teams chosen from a record 712 entries across 89 countries.

They settled on measuring pion charge exchange: a positive pion hits a neutron and produces a neutral pion and a proton. It matters to DUNE, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, because pion interactions feed into estimates of a neutrino’s flavor and energy. DUNE co-spokesperson Dave Newbold calls it real experimental particle physics, not a classroom demonstration, and rates it far above anything he considered in high school.

At CERN the team spent two weeks on detectors and data acquisition. Preparation revealed the reaction is extremely rare, forcing hard thinking about detecting it at all with just 12 days of beam time. Support scientist Berare Göktürk was candid that a DUNE-useful result would be ambitious — her priority is that the students understand the journey of a scientist. Srivastava, a theorist who grew up in India, didn’t know what CERN was in high school. These students, he says, are just that good.

Kyle Lambert had worked remotely for most of his career and always dreamed of having his own backyard office. A place on the property but completely separate from the home.

Until this year, that idea seemed too unnecessary… then our baby grew into a toddler. We have a small house in Portland. We love it, and it works for us, but it became clear that it could use more space.

I looked into many options. My budget’s two most viable paths were an Autonomous.ai prefab office Pod or building an office by utilizing a shed frame. The Autonomous pods are gorgeous and come prewired with electricity. You just plug them into an outlet in your house. But I wanted proper heating and air conditioning. I had spent hot summers working with a portable AC unit blasting in the background, and it just wasn’t for me. Their base starts at $16.5k; adding $5k shipping, paying someone to assemble it (I didn’t have time to DIY), and adding a mini-split HVAC system, and we were getting closer to $30k. It was not bad, but it was more than I wanted to spend, not knowing how long we plan on staying in our house.

Deciding against an Autonomous Pod left me with the shed conversion option. I decided on using Tuff Shed for the main frame. I was able to design and configure my structure using their online designer. They also have a local showroom in town, so I walked through some models to get an idea of what I wanted.

Today, anyone with a large enough artificial intelligence model can generate millions of new material designs in minutes. Unfortunately, that hasn’t led to a huge leap in the number of new materials being used to improve the performance of products like computer chips and rockets.

One reason for the translation gap is that current models don’t reliably factor in the chemical stability of the materials they generate, and unstable materials aren’t very useful in the real world. That forces industries to allocate huge computational budgets to screening out all the unstable materials they generate, in some cases leaving behind a tiny fraction of usable options.

Now, MIT researchers have developed a framework that can be applied at the beginning of the materials generation process to vastly improve the stability rate while achieving targeted material properties. It works by ensuring every design satisfies certain key rules of chemistry relating to the electrons around the materials’ atoms before the expensive generation step begins. The researchers call their approach “crystal generator with valence-constrained design, or CrysVCD.

Wadis, or river valleys that are dry in winter months, in Yemen are pictured from the International Space Station as it orbited 256 miles above. via NASA

 

Sometimes meandering, sometimes turbulent, every river seems to have its own character. But the behavior and nature of river networks follow mathematical rules. In 1957, USGS scientist John Hack discovered what became known as Hack’s law: The length of any stream is proportional to its drainage area raised to the power of 0.6. ( L ~ A0.6). Earlier this year, scientists discovered that Hack’s law also holds for river deltas. Read on to learn about rivers and their mathematical bedrock from Natalie Wolchover on Quanta Magezine:

Systems that branch in this way are “transport networks”: They transport some fluid substance (water, blood, traffic) from every place to a single place (the sea, a heart, a city center). Of the various examples, rivers are especially revealing, I think, since they arise from neither biological evolution nor urban planning, but rather chaotic Earth processes. Yet they obey simple, universal laws.

Colin Leroy-Mira has just released a new Quicktake for Apple II version, and it is a quite large upgrade.

The program now supports a new camera, the Kodak DC50 Zoom, released in 1996, thirteen years after the Apple IIe. The camera’s custom cable is rather easy to make (and my serial hardware allows to skip making a custom cable altogether). All features are supported (picture download, thumbnail preview, date/name/flash/quality settings, picture deletion).

The camera is able to do 115200bps on the serial port, which makes transfers blazing-fast compared to the Quicktakes!

It has both internal storage and a PCMCIA slot. Mine came with a 6MB storage card, which is a ludicrous amount of storage, allowing for 92 low quality pictures or 36 high quality ones. My program will work with the storage card when it is inserted, and the internal memory otherwise.

Andrea Ricci ported DOOM to SCINTIX P4 (an ESP32-P4 + ESP32-C6 module in the Raspberry Pi CM4/CM5 form factor) and then let Claude Sonnet play it.

The game runs on a 1024×600 MIPI-DSI panel, hardware-scaled to 30 FPS by the P4’s PPA. A small WebSocket “lockstep” API + an MCP server expose the running game to an LLM.

The agent is deliberately limited to what a human sees on screen — a raycast depth fan across the field of view, on-screen enemies in line of sight, an ASCII automap of discovered walls, plus “door ahead” and “you’re blocked” hints — and issues moves, turns, fire and use.

Fully open source.

    Manfred Mornhinweg bought a Chinese J306β Geiger-Müller counter tube, the glass version, which is rated to give 88 counts per minute at average background radiation, or 8 counts per second at a radiation intensity of 1µSv/h. This tube is nearly 20cm long, and about 18mm in diameter.

    I took quite some time to decide whether to use a microcontroller to count the pulses and display various processed measurements on an LCD, or choose the classical way and use dumb circuitry and an analog meter. Each method has its own specific advantages: A microcontroller can integrate the counts over a long time, achieving greater accuracy when measuring stable radiation levels, and also measuring the total dose over a long time. Instead an analog meter is far more convenient when scanning an area for radiation sources, because it’s so much easier to watch a needle move up, than to read and interpret dancing numbers on a display.

    It was sort of a tie between the two approaches. The decisive factor, in the end, was that with this large tube I could easily do enough averaging by simply using a basic analog low-pass circuit, a feat that is not really practical when using small tubes. So the rule is: Small tubes used to measure low-level radiation need to be used with digital counters, while large tubes can use analog circuits even at low radiation levels. At high levels, any size of tube can work with analog circuitry. My decision to built an analog Geiger counter was further reaffirmed by the fact that many Chinese digital Geiger counters are widely available. Instead of building my own, it would be more practical and even less expensive to just buy a ready-made one from China. So, to bring any sense into building a Geiger counter at home these days, I went analog.

    **PIXEL QUEST** is a handheld game console you can hold in both hands — three original

    mini-games, a 2-inch screen, eight knobs and a joystick.

    But hold the blue button while powering it on with a USB cable connected, and the same

    device wakes up as something completely different: a **USB MIDI control surface** for

    photo and video editing software. The eight knobs become Exposure, Contrast, Highlights,

    Shadows — the sliders you would otherwise drag one at a time with a mouse.

    Same hardware. Same firmware binary. Two entirely different machines, chosen at the

    moment you press the power button.

    So what can you do? Or, as a matter of fact, what can a Raspberry Pi do? As it turns out, quite a lot. This single-board computer — about the size of a wallet — can tell you exactly when your water is at its coldest, no guessing required. Instead of opening the fridge every ten minutes, I strapped a temperature sensor to the bottle and let a Raspberry Pi do the waiting for me.

    xssfox in Australia, while taking some rubbish down, spotted a Cricut Maker in e-waste. A quick look at it revealed that the it was in fairly good cosmetic condition with the exception of the rollers being perished.

    I knew that Cricut were pretty aggressive with disabling/locking machines, but I gathered it would still be worth playing around for some fun. As it turns out this machine was locked, which was pretty expected. However with some hacking I was able to return it to having full functionality.

    I fired up wireshark to capture USB messages between the Cricut and my machine. It uses USB CDC for communication and very quickly I found the packets responsible for sending the serial number. There didn’t appear to be any checksumming or crypto. So I borrowed a RPi RP2040 (Adafruit Feather RP2040 with USB Type A Host) which was able to act as both USB Host and USB Client.

    Using the TinyUSB Arduino examples for USB Host and CDC simple echo, I was able to cobble together a simple proxy/rewriting device. With the rewriting device replacing out the serial number at a hardware level the software is none the wiser. The unit shows up in my account.

    The breadboard I buy have a sticky back which makes a permanent fixture, or you could just hot glue etc.

    There’s been a lot of talk about the vuln-pocalypse, to which Dan Luu doesn’t have much to add because Dan isn’t not a security person. But there hasn’t been much discussion on the closely related (and to be fair, less serious, issue), the benchmark-pocalypse.

    While it’s become easier than ever to make serious performance gains, it’s also become easier than ever to reward hack a benchmark and make fake performance gains. The former is probably happening quietly across many different companies, but the latter is something I see at least once a week nowadays. Someone will claim they optimized X and got some huge performance improvement over existing software, but, when you look at it, what they did was make some optimization that improves benchmark performance without actually improving real-world performance. This is often some kind of “we rewrote X in Rust” project or a new startup that’s looking to either fundraise or sell something, but it happens on other kinds of projects as well.

    Of course, people have always trumpeted unrepresentative microbenchmarks to show that their pet project is great. It’s always been easy to fake up an unrepresentative microbenchmark and that’s never going to change. What’s changed is that it used to take a lot of work to game a large benchmark suite, but an LLM and loop can just do it. There are quite a few famous examples of gaming large benchmark suites from back when this was hard. For example, way back when people cared about SPECint / SPECfp as proxies for workstation performance, CPU vendors would try to find compiler “optimizations” that would speed up the calculation in the benchmark, such as Sun finding a way to improve 179.art by 12x in SPECfp2000. Skilled engineers spent a lot of time trying to find benchmark hacks like that. LLMs not only make this trivial, they do it by default, making formerly trustworthy benchmarks meaningless unless you audit the result or trust someone who did.

    Rather than point to someone’s bad claim, I’ll point to FRE, this regex engine I had an agent build, which I could claim is the world’s fastest regex engine because it beats the Rust regex crate at the fairly comprehensive rebar regex benchmark suite. But this was created by putting an agent in a loop for a month with instructions to not overfit to the benchmark but no real supervision. For the most part, getting an LLM to give you a good benchmark score is fairly easy, and this case was no different; it took a couple weeks to roughly match Rust regex crate performance and then another couple weeks to get to 1.4x faster on rebar. But agents are wont to reward hack and overfit unless you put serious guardrails in place to avoid that, which I didn’t do in this case as an experiment.

    A new paper in the Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Buildings and Cities entitled Data Center Waste Heat as an Emerging Urban Thermal Hazard: First Field Measurements of Neighborhood-Scale Air Temperature Impacts by David J. Sailor, Soroush Samareh Abolhassani, Eli P. Martin:

    Data centers are among the fastest-growing sources of concentrated anthropogenic heat in urban environments. Despite heat flux densities that exceed peak solar irradiance by a factor of 2–6, their thermal impacts on adjacent communities have never been directly measured or reported in the peer-reviewed literature. This short communication addresses that gap by presenting the first vehicle-based traverse measurements of air temperature in residential neighborhoods downwind of operational data centers.

    This communication presents the first field evidence that operational data centers produce measurable warming in adjacent residential neighborhoods, with the downwind warming effect as large as 2.2 °C and average downwind air temperatures 0.7–0.9 °C warmer than upwind temperatures, extending more than 250 m downwind. These impacts arise from heat flux densities of 2000–6000 W/m2, magnitudes 2–6 times peak solar irradiance, equivalent to the heat emitted by thousands of residential buildings concentrated on a single site.

    openbricks – Pybricks-style MicroPython Robot Firmware for ESP32

    openbricks is an open-source (MIT) MicroPython firmware for ESP32-S3 that brings a Pybricks-style Python robotics API to commodity hardware: $15 serial-bus servos, a SPI IMU, reflectance arrays. The motor hot path runs at 1 kHz in native C inside the firmware: drivebase controller, trajectory planner, and gyro heading correction read inside the control tick. Programs cross-compile on the host with mpy-cross and upload over BLE, and a MuJoCo-based simulator runs the same firmware API unchanged for hardware-free development – openbricks.dev, documentation and GitHub.

    I spent more time on fixing the CircuitPython BLE workflow last week. After a lot of testing, mostly done by test scripts written by an LLM, I determined that the problem was with the particular BLE adapter on my desktop computer. I replaced it with a better-supported adapter and the base problem went away. There is still an issue that Linux does not provide a pairing agent automatically, but we can document workarounds for that.

    I have continued work related to audio this week. I did some more testing on the USB audio stereo support and found a bug in synthio.Note panning. A fix for that was submitted and I tested it. I have also been working on a CircuitPython board def and some core modules to support another Teenage Engineering device. This one has an nRF52840 main chip, along with an I2S audio codec, and 4Gb EMMC storage. I’ve made good progress, the device is booting successfully under CircuitPython and I have functional audio PoC code. My next goal is getting the EMMC working to be able to copy songs to the device and eventually play them back.

    At the end of last week I started working on Zephyr BLE pairing and bonding which leads to secure connections. BLE GATT support for Zephyr was also merged. I’m looking forward to getting the BLE workflow going with Zephyr.
