Slava S. on GitHub has a 28.9 million parameter language model that generates text on an ESP32-S3, a microcontroller that costs about $8.

It runs on the chip itself, with nothing sent to a server, and it writes each word to a small screen wired to the chip at roughly 9 tokens per second.

The last language model people ran on a chip like this had 260 thousand parameters, so this one holds about a hundred times more. It fits because most of the model lives in flash instead of RAM, using an idea from Google’s Gemma models called Per-Layer Embeddings.

The way around it is to stop putting the model in fast memory at all. Most of a language model’s parameters sit in an embedding table, which the model reads from rather than computes on. So you can leave that 25 million row table in slow flash and pull only the few rows each token needs, about 450 bytes, while the small part that does the actual work stays in fast memory. The large model then costs almost nothing to run, because you never load most of it. It just sits in flash and gets sampled a little at a time.

That idea is Google’s Per-Layer Embeddings, from Gemma 3n and Gemma 4. Here it runs on the memory layout of a microcontroller instead of a phone or a GPU. As far as I can tell, nobody had tried it on a chip this small.

  SRAM  (fast, tiny)   the "thinking" core, used on every token
  PSRAM (medium)       the output head and working memory
  FLASH (huge, slow)   the 25M-param table, 6 rows per token (~450 B)
The model was trained on TinyStories, so it writes short, simple stories and mostly keeps them coherent. It will not answer questions, follow instructions, write code, or know facts. That limit comes from the small part of the model that does the reasoning.

It is not a conventional OS and it is very far from production-ready, but it now boots directly into a persistent interactive MicroPython REPL.

Bring the productive bustle of ambient coffee shop sounds with you anywhere by building a white noise machine in a cup! This project uses the Adafruit Audio FX Board to play a 30 minute audio file on repeat. The circuit is battery powered with the help of a lipoly backpack, which also allows for convenient recharging over USB and the easy addition of a power switch. A speaker rests inside the lip of the cup, driven by a class D audio amplifier using a 10K potentiometer for volume control.

The Cup o’ Sound requires no programming and is excellent for practicing your through-hole and free-wire soldering skills. The result is a satisfyingly compact handful of portable sound that can be reused in many contexts or rewired to act as a speaker alone.

EMF Camp has recently taken place in the UK. This, every two year, festival/hacker camp sees around 4000 people descend on the grounds of Eastnor Castle UK. It’s an amazing event with all manner of talks, art installations, workshops and indeed partying in Null Sector.

Amongst all this the fabulous Chia, Kliment and Carston pulled together an amazing E‑Sport style FreeCAD speed run challenge in the hardware hacking tent.

This event saw a group of people get together and compete in 3 ten minute rounds each having a unique small FreeCAD project challenge. The idea was that people had to replicate a FreeCAD project from a technical drawing. Round one was a small box with radial fillets on all external and internal edges, round two was a “hexpansion” which is the term for a hexagonal add on for the official EMF badge and the final round was to replicate a Club Mate bottle!

Designed for next-generation AIoT applications, ESP32-S31 is a high-performance dual-core RISC-V SoC with comprehensive wireless connectivity, making it ideal for smart home hubs, smart speakers, edge AI devices, industrial automation, and more.

ESP32-S31 features a dual-core 32-bit RISC-V CPU running at up to 320 MHz, with one core supporting a 128-bit data path and SIMD instruction set for accelerated computing performance. The chip also integrates a 40 MHz low-power coprocessor, 512 KB of on-chip SRAM, support for high-speed 250 MHz DDR PSRAM expansion, and up to 60 GPIOs.

ESP32-S31 integrates WiFi 6 (2.4 GHz), Bluetooth 5.4 (including LE Audio and Classic BR/EDR), IEEE 802.15.4 (Zigbee and Thread), and a Gigabit Ethernet MAC. It also supports Matter over both WiFi and Thread.

To support rich human-machine interaction, ESP32-S31 provides interfaces for DVP cameras, multiple LCD display types, and up to 14 capacitive touch channels. Dedicated hardware accelerators (including a JPEG encoder/decoder and a 2D graphics acceleratorhelp improve multimedia performance, while dual I2S controllers enable hardware-level Bluetooth audio synchronization.

A simple 3 button macro pad shared by Arnov Sharma on Instructables:

We’re utilizing PICO as an HID device, adding three mechanical switches to it and an OLED screen to perform COPY PASTE and erase commands.

The idea here was to create a super small macropad that I could use while using Fusion360 and other software that required frequent use of the COPY, PASTE, and DELETE commands. We have also incorporated an OLED screen to provide feedback on which command has been selected

Daniel Lawrence Lu bought an NVIDIA DGX Spark.

It’s actually quite a competent general purpose computer while being super tiny and power efficient. It basically just has an ARM CPU, a decent NVIDIA GPU (with the same number of CUDA cores as the RTX 5070), 128 GB of unified memory, and a 4 TB SSD.

The DGX Spark runs “DGX OS” but it is in fact just plain old Ubuntu 24.04 with some additions. The CPU has a Geekbench 6 score roughly on par with an M3 Pro 14 core and an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X: 2983 single core and 18183 multi core.

Can it run Crysis? It turns out, it can totally run Crysis. The DGX Spark is quite decent at gaming in fact.

So anyway the whole thing is great (price tag notwithstanding):

  • it handles my “main PC” use cases, such as light occasional gaming, CAD needs (Rhino 3D), and photography workflow
  • generates LLM tokens decently for simple coding tasks and automation
  • power-efficient and quiet
  • looks nice
  • whatever doesn’t run out of the box, I can just get AI agents to get it working

The various magic-tech objects in the Harry Potter books + movies are often ingenious and imaginative (omnioculars, Dumbledore’s Pensieve). Few stand out in my mind as vividly as the Weasley Clock. This build from maker lakeprojects turned out great (cool to see it done in German, too!). Via Instructables:

I can not remember when exactly, but at one point I thought it would be very cool to have a proper working Weasley. It sholuld be a gift for my mom, who loves Harry Potter and is a huge fan of Molly Weasley.

So I designed and produced this clock, which can display the location of 5 people, ever via GPS tracking or by using an app on each users phone.

zx82net turned an old amp cabinet into a bluetooth speaker and shared the build on Instructables. We love zx82net’s focus on adapting for what you have on hand!

This started with a $4 purchase: an empty Fender 10G practice amp cabinet, sitting around looking for a second life. It’s now a great sounding Bluetooth speaker with controls to easily adjust it for any placement, indoors or outdoors, against a wall or in the middle of a room. It runs for hours off the internal rechargeable battery and charges with UCB-C. It’ll make a great addition to any summer garden party.

I’ll describe this build in detail, but also explain how to adapt the design to use whatever cabinet and drivers you have to hand.

It features a pressure-sensitive trackpad that rests on the palate and, combined with head tracking, can be used to move a cursor, click, and swipe. Interacting with local nature can be very fun. Over on Instructables Hey Jude in Living put together a build a nice little home for squirrels that also serves as a squirrel observation opportunity:

So, dear remaining readers, as someone who is also up for some squirrel shenanigans, welcome, and this Instructable was a fun way to entice squirrels to nest. I have not got there just yet, but signals look promising, so I remain hopeful. It should also be said, perhaps do not do this if you are worried about squirrels running amuck in your attic or suchlike, and indeed, I give a freestanding variation on this later on. They are basically very entertaining rats with more fluff, so perhaps don’t encourage them to set up home near where you might regret it.

This guide is more where I got to in making a place that will invite squirrels, whilst also enabling filming, and indeed, making the film gear ‘squirrel proof’ (ie protecting cameras and cables from sharp teeth, and a tendency for squirrels to wanna gnaw stuff at random!!).

Michał Zalewski on the lcamtuf’s thing blog says when working on the book, The Secret Life of Circuits, he wanted to keep the artwork real.

My beef with the diagrams in popular electronics textbooks and online tutorials is that most of them are fake. At best, they’re retraced from ancient texts; at worst, they’re sketched from memory and can be charitably described as “inspired by true events”.

The Secret Life of Circuits contains about 290 original illustrations and does its best to avoid such shenanigans. I painstakingly gathered real data for everything from quartz crystal frequency response, to battery discharge curves, to signal reflections in a 100 ft run of coax cable strewn around the workshop, to the behavior of vacuum tubes.

Random Nerd Tutorials shows how to establish a bidirectional Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication between a Raspberry Pi and a Raspberry Pi Pico.

The Raspberry Pi Pico will be set as a BLE peripheral with two characteristics. The Raspberry Pi will read and write to those characteristics, establishing a bidirectional communication.

For the Raspberry Pi Python program, we’ll use the bleak library, and for the Pico MicroPython program, we’ll use the aioble library.

Doom is a video game made by id Software that released in 1993. It was a revolution in gaming that spread across the world and defined the modern FPS. Its popularity has given rise to the saying “Doom can run on anything”. To prove this point Doom has been ported to almost everything, from microcontrollers, to toasters, and even bacteria.

Armaan Gomes and Liam successfully ran (crawled) Doom on a CPU built from scratch (and then posted a video that got a few million views).

To be honest, I still can’t believe it. What did we really do though? Well, we designed a custom CPU at the logic gate level, connected it to peripherals, adapted the DOOM source code to run on our machine, and deployed it onto an FPGA to run in real time. Before running Doom, we had only run simple programs that we had written, like Pong and Mandelbrot sets. Now we can run full published games, but getting here was a rather rocky road.

The Adafruit NeoPixel Überguide has been updated with info for how to use the new 5050 WWA White LEDs with Integrated Drivers that you can find in the NeoPixel Stick – 8 x 5050 WWA White LEDs with Integrated Drivers. WWA LEDs have 3 white LEDs in them in three tints (also known as ‘color temperatures’): warm white, cool white and amber, great for excellent lighting effects that want pure white lite. These are fun and glowy, and you can control each LED individually!

Michael Martin is working through a port of a shooting gallery Rosetta-stone program to the ZX Spectrum.

It’s been a long road. We started out knowing how to control text and bitmap output and a decent handle on I/O. From there we designed a reasonably efficient blitting system that operated on 16×16 “sprites” that we carefully prepared for efficient blitting.

Even this wasn’t enough to keep our graphics updates smooth, though, so we then had to carefully arrange our bitmap operations to tear instead of flicker. I’ve been putting this project together bit by bit.

Rafał Opiłowski was looking at setting up a new homelab, starting with a comprehensive networking setup.

Given my experiences related to performance and security issues with ISP-provider routers, I wanted to have a better control over the traffic on my home network. I decided to heavily focus traffic on wired connections, to offload WiFi and ensure connection between devices over local network are as fast as possible.

That’s where Mikrotik L009UiGS-RM comes in play. It has enough Gigabit Ethernet ports to connect all my Ethernet ports on the walls. PoE is a nice bonus too, as I can power my access point without having to use a wall wart.

The handheld games of 2000: how could we forget the LCD screens and the cheesiness. Nicole Express got one at a church fundraiser and did a comparison with another model which advertises voice.

Another oddity about the box. Take a look at the screen. Notice that it has square blocks with a square inside, and a number of icons. Now compare it to the real thing.

Now notice on the real thing. The block have spades inside each of them, and the sidebar segments are different too, with an odd child. I don’t really think anything of it, but it is odd.

So, what is the Talking Brick Game 118-in-1? Well, the packaging promises all sorts of games…

Simon Park still has a netbook bought back in 2009. The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE has an Intel Atom N280 and 1GB of DDR2 RAM. The Atom N series was Intel’s line of cheap, low-performance CPUs for netbooks.

The chip has 56KB of L1 cache and 512KB of L2 cache, and its clock speed is 1.667GHz. Compare that with the Intel Core i3 N305, a budget laptop processor released in 2023, which has 768KB of L1 cache, 4MB of L2 cache, and runs at 3.8GHz, and you get a feel for how poor the Eee PC’s performance is.

How am I just finding out about the concept of a Moon Tree? How twee! How early 1970s late-stage Space Age optimism! Learn more about Celestial Celebrations here from Madison Square Park Conservancy:

In 1971, NASA astronaut Stuart Roosa carried seeds from five tree species on the Apollo 14 mission. After returning to Earth, the seeds were germinated, and the resulting seedlings, known as Moon Trees, were distributed to schools, state capitals, national parks, NASA centers, and dignitaries around the world.

Building on this legacy, in 2022, NASA’s Artemis Program sent a new generation of Moon Tree seeds into space, where they orbited the moon for four weeks aboard the Orion spacecraft. When they returned to Earth, Forest Service scientists studied and germinated the seeds, and Madison Square Park Conservancy (MSPC) was chosen by NASA to receive one of the seedlings!

On July 16, join Madison Square Park Conservancy for a celebration inspired by our Moon Tree, an American Sweetgum sapling grown from seeds that traveled around the Moon aboard NASA’s Artemis I mission.

Build a handy kitchen timer with the Adafruit MagTag. This project uses the eInk display, NeoPixels, and built-in buttons of the Adafruit MagTag to make a rechargeable, programmable kitchen timer that is also magnetic. The MagTag displays the time left and then plays an alarm through the speaker and flashes the NeoPixels when the timer is done.

Raspberry Pi Pico software development kit pico-sdk version 2.3.0 has been released.

This is a minor release of the SDK with many bug fixes and documentation improvements, along with some new features.

  • More board configurations
  • Modified configurations with PSRAM constants
  • P2350’s XIP cache can now be used as additional SRAM via pico_use_xip_cache_as_ram()

New libraries:

  • hardware_psram
  • pico_low_power
  • pico_thread_local
  • pico_usb_reset

Maxime Rivest has created a project similar to the Harry Potter diary of Tom Riddle, using the reMarkable Paper Pro tablet.

Write on the page with your pen. After a pause, the diary drinks your ink — your words fade into the paper — the page thinks for a moment, and an answer writes itself back in a flowing hand, stroke by stroke, then fades away.

No screen glow, no keyboard, no chat UI. Just ink appearing on paper.

The diary’s replies come from a vision LLM that reads your handwriting from the committed page (sent as an inline PNG).

Although Harlem is well-known as a cultural hub for Black artists of various mediums, it also has a history of being overlooked and underserved in comparison to other pockets of Manhattan, leading to grassroots organizations and community-based programs to fill the gaps the city often didn’t provide. The Children’s Art Carnival in Harlem is one of them. Hyperallergic shares the importance of the Children’s Art Carnival in Harlem and it’s history of motivating children to nurture their creativity.

In March 1969, at the first-ever Children’s Art Carnival in Harlem, artist, activist, and educator Betty Blayton-Taylor looked on as groups of children painted at easels and strung objects together to make hanging sculptures. Held in a garage provided by the Harlem School of the Arts, the event engaged artists to conduct workshops for local kids. “Children can just as well use their energy to be creative as destructive,” Blayton-Taylor told the New York Times in a 1969 interview. “They’re having fun and that’s what we want.”

The American Wood Column Corp is located in Brooklyn, New York. It’s one of the last holdouts of old-school woodwork manufacturing in the city and is officially NYC’s last wood column factory. The family company’s CEO Thomas Lupo is quite candid and charming about the history and reality of the business, which will soon closer its doors.

The tour continued to the compo room, which houses a library of more than 9,000 ornamental casts, some dating back to the 1800s. Hand-labeled by number, they are stored like books, floor-to-ceiling, on shelves commanding three sides of the room. Here, craftsmen mix the compo and pour it into molds. When they dry, the ornaments — scrolls, rosettes, medallions, nosegays, feathers, curlicues — can be pressed onto surfaces like walls and ceilings, even furniture.
