Using OpenET to Track Water Across the States

A map of the contiguous U.S. shows OpenET’s free water data, now expaneded to cover 48 states instead of the westernmost 27 states. The color gradient represents the total annual evapotranspiration – the amount of water lost to the atmosphere through plants and evaporation – from orange (low) to dark blue (high).

The OpenET is an open-source program led by NASA, the U.S. Geological Survey, California State University Monterey Bay, Environmental Defense Fund, Desert Research Institute, Google Earth Engine, and HabitatSeven to provide information on evapotranspiration across the 48 contiguous states.

Evapotranspiration is the movement of water from the ground to the atmosphere through plants and by direct evaporation from the ground. The OpenET program serves as an important tool for water resource management, irrigation planning, drought monitoring, and fire risk evaluation.
