Calling All Young Music Makers

Our pals at The Maker Music Festival have announced a “Young Music Maker Competition.” We’re excited to see what young maker-musicians will do in answering this challenge.

Calling all Young Music Makers!

This year we are launching a competition for young makers, aged 12 to 16 years, to share and be recognized for their music related projects.

Ideally, projects should be focused on building interesting or unusual musical instruments. The theme of this year’s competition is “Circuit Bending.” We have selected circuit bending because it is a great way for young makers to get interested in music and electronics by experimenting with inexpensive, thrift store electronics (toys, drum machines, keyboards, etc.) that use battery powered (low-voltage) devices to create new instruments and sounds.

“Creating music from the craziest things is another level of excitement,” said Argentine artist and musician, Laureano Cantarutti, “and this competition will enable young music makers to experiment with electronics to make unique instruments and sounds.”

All completed projects will be published on the Maker Music Festival site, and will be included in the GHAZALA Building, named after Reed Ghazala, the recognized “father” of circuit bending.

Makers can be individuals or teams but must be youth led (ages 12-16 years old).

Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of expert Music Makers, and the judging criteria will be based on:

– Technical excellence
– Visual appeal
– Musicality
– Quality of submitted video
– Fun factor

Prizes (cash and merchandise) will be awarded to the top three winners. Thanks to @adafruit and other partners for their participation and contributions.

Timeline:

– Submit completed project to Maker Music Festival: April 4th, 2022
– Projects judged: April 25th, 2022
– Winners announced: May 2nd, 2022
– Maker Music Festival 2022 live: May 14th & 15th, 2022
