Project SNOWstorm uses solar powered GPS transmitters to collect precise data on snowy owls. Fun Article about the project from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Yahoo:
Affection and concern for the species led Racine native David Brinker and a group of other ornithologists in 2013 to form Project SNOWstorm, a crowd-funded initiative to study and help conserve the owls.
But Brinker knows it’s important to not get too attached to the project’s subjects.

Ever since I saw Adam Savage build a portable soldering station, I’ve been thinking about creating one for myself.
I don’t do enough electronics anymore to justify a dedicated electronics bench. When I do have a need for soldering, it’s a hassle to get everything set up just to do a few solder points. And, in my new house, I have two work areas on different floors. So, I know I will break down and create a portable station at some point.
Here is Laura Kampf’s answer to such a portable, fully-powered station.
Fascintating video from Vox about London’s superrich who are building intensely elaborate basements, and how this is ticking off some of their less well-off (but still relatively well-off) neighbors.
Professor Roger Burrows and his coauthors collected data on every basement construction project in from 2008 to 2019, and mapped it. They found more than 7,000 basement additions had been built. A combination of historic preservation laws, rapidly ballooning property values, and changing tastes have led to a boom in basement building.
This construction hasn’t been without complications. Many of the existing residents see the constant construction as a “plague” that’s hollowed out the city, contributed to air pollution, and even changed the acoustics of their homes. Burrows sees it as a symbol of increasing wealth inequality in the global city.
Super fun list from Tor.com. What non-holiday movies do you binge during break? I always watch Kingergarten Cop in that weird, lazy limbo between Christmas and New Years.
There are plenty of holiday films that we adore, favorites that we screen every year to great applause (or groans) from family and friends. But don’t we all have a few films or TV shows that we associate with the holidays, despite them having nothing to do with the season?
Here are a few of our go-tos while we’re holed up with cocoa, gingerbread, and mulled wine.
(Now we really want mulled wine…)
