Driving 512 LEDs from a Nintendo Switch: ESP32, WS2812, and a 240fps

Brewser is a homebrew web runtime for modded Switch consoles. The app Matrix Studio lets you drive an LED Matrix from your Switch!

Matrix Studio is a pixel art and animation app running in Brewser, a homebrew web runtime and app platform for modded Nintendo Switch consoles. It streams frames live to a 512-LED WS2812 matrix through an ESP32 over USB serial.

How it works: frames are delta-encoded with a full keyframe every half second. A write that runs long skips the next frame instead of queuing it, so latency never builds up. Clocking out 512 WS2812 LEDs takes about 15 ms, which sets a hard ceiling of roughly 65 fps.
