Alex Alemi thinks slide rules rule and is rather enamored with them. Alex has collected several over the years. A favorite is an old Soviet KL-1 (above).
Unlike a pocket calculator, it feels like using a slide rule helps you develop a better number sense, rather than rob you of one. An elegant weapon for a more civilized age.
In order to ensure that I always have a slide rule at my disposal, I recently build a digital one, available at sliderule.alexalemi.com.
If you’d like to learn more about slide rules, you can download a PDF copy of Alex’ Zine that you can print and fold yourself. If you want to learn more, there is an old book by Isaac Asimov, or a great 1957 Educational film.

Editor’s note: I learned slide rule in high school electronics class where the classroom had a large yellow two meter model above the blackboard. I bought a beautiful model, bambu with ivory (?) overlay with a leather case from my teacher. I had it until VCF Midwest in September where I sold it to someone that might use it more than me.
