Low Power Mode and Custom Dashboards. What’s new with Adafruit IO and the Adafruit Learning System.

WipperSnapper Update

Adafruit IO allows you to save small base64 encoded images in your feeds, and once you set your feed to public then they can be shown in a public Dashboard (as well as on the Feed page). JP was showing it off in his ‘John Parks Workshop‘ live stream yesterday, saved from the MEMENTO.

Up until now any user browsing public feed pages wasn’t shown the image preview that the owner is shown, but that’s now been fixed and will be deployed very soon once we’ve ensured it’s easy to report any issues.

Also the no-code firmware WipperSnapper has had the web-based installer updated to use the latest esptool-js changes, bringing improved web-serial reliability to the ESP32-S2 and other boards.

Low Power Mode is Coming!

Low Power Mode is coming to WipperSnapper. In WipperSnapper v2.0 – we are bringing light sleep + deep sleep support to firmware. Less battery utilization means you can spend less time worrying about your IoT device’s power consumption and more time playing. Support is currently being developed for the ESP32.

Big Adafruit IO Dashboard Update

We released a big update to the way dashboard blocks work. Here are the highlights:
  • Allows overlapping blocks with move back functionality.
  • No longer using collision detection when not overlapping to prevent blocks jumping all over.
  • Dashboard settings now visible when editing layouts and functional in full screen mode

New Guides on the Adafruit Learning System

MagTag IoT Menorah

Liz Clark shares a seasonal project that turns the MagTag eInk display into a fully automated, internet‑synced menorah. The guide walks through fetching the date and sunset times online, tracking each night of Hanukkah, and revealing the candle flames on the display as the holiday progresses. It’s a low‑power, elegant build that blends CircuitPython, deep sleep, and thoughtful design for a modern take on a traditional ritual.

Apple IIe Emulator on Fruit Jam

Build an Apple IIe inspired 3D printed enclosure for the Adafruit Fruit Jam. This project is designed to pair nicely with the Apple IIe Emulator on Fruit Jam.

This guide covers the 3D printable CAD files, case assembly and keyboard setup. There is no soldering required making this a great project for beginners!
