Just in case you need a little dread in your life, here is a kinetic sculpture that recreates a degrading star system. Not that anything like that would ever happen to our solar system, at least not before our sun gives up out of sheer exhaustion. That said, a model of a system degrading may be a strange sort of comfort. If that’s the case for you, here’s the project from The 5439 Workshop via lackaday:
This is a coffee table, not a particularly practical one, but one that I wanted to make. It has a mechanical orrery (star system) with both tilting orbits and an exploding star. It is built from cherry wood and aluminium, I have never used this many tools for a single project, it’s everything from woodworking, metal working / welding to 3d print, electronics and some coding (used simplefoc). I’m trying to combine my builds with storytelling, I enjoyed getting into vfx a bit too much.
