It’s amazing to think that planetary gears, also known as epicyclic gears, were invented by the Greeks more than 2,000 years ago. As the name implies, a central gear, called the sun gear, engages a series of planetary gears that orbit the sun. This whole assembly is then surrounded by a ring gear (the rest of the heavens?). All of the gear types can be controlled separately.
