Remix by Mythmarco:

A spooky-cute remix pairing a Blender-designed pumpkin head with an articulated spider body. AMS and No-AMS variants. Orange PLA for the pumpkin, black PETG for the spider frame (recommended for strength). Snap-together legs, no supports, brim needed for the pumpkin head. By Mythmarco

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

Gotham Whale‘s communications director Chris Saint Lawrence spoke to WNYC’s Sean Carlson about humpback whales in NYC waters. Listen to the story here and get involved with Gotham Whale’s citizen science program:

When you’re near or on the water in the New York Bight, keep an eye out for marine mammals. If you spot a whale, dolphin, or seal, submit your sighting using the data collection form below. Please be as specific as possible; your detailed information is crucial for our database records and ongoing research efforts. Join us in protecting and understanding these incredible creatures!

Michal Zalewski on the lcamtuf’s thing website writes:

If you tinker with analog electronics, you might have heard that some circuits can exhibit negative resistance. This is usually followed by a current-to-voltage plot featuring some sort of a kinked curve and an assertion that this property might help the circuit designer in some way.

But what does it mean, exactly? The concept of negative resistance is interesting, counterintuitive, and explained on Wikipedia in a rather rambling way.

Check out the conditions where this is present in the post here.

15 Outdoor Art Shows to See in NYC This Summer via hyperallergic

You know what they say: When the heat, and smoke, and floods go away, New York comes out to play. It’s finally time, and you’ve more than earned it. We’ve put together a playlist of sorts, one that takes you to islands, beaches — even bus shelters — across all five boroughs.

See the city through a different lens via giant kaleidoscopes in Pelham Bay. Have yourself a game of ping-pong on artist-designed tables at Rockaway Beach. Get a little intimate with a massive teddy bear in a courtyard in Queens. Get weird with a neural network’s hallucinations in a Midtown sculpture garden. Frolic on Governors Island, my personal paradise. And if you find yourself craving a little AC, check out our list of 30 indoor exhibitions to see this summer.

It’s the best time of year on the best city on earth. Live a little!

Check out their full list!

Bob Alexander at  Galactic Studios has been recreating Robert Tinney’s Byte magazine paintings as photographs.

The latest work is “Technological Breakthrough”.

Byte’s January 1986 issue had a focus on robotics. Mr. Tinney painted a robot claw hatching out of an egg. As I’ve done with several other Byte covers, I re-created Tinney’s vision as if it were real, and as if a photographer had been standing next to Tinney as he painted.

This was an obvious cover to re-create since Tinney had, eight months earlier, used the same claw design in a painting I had already re-created.

Or at least, so I thought. In my initial test photographs, I realized that the claw in Tinney’s Intelligent Reflections cover was much larger, in proportion to its “wrist”, than the claw in Technological Breakthrough. I had to either redesign and re-manufacture the claw, or Photoshop it. I chose to do the latter.

See this work on Bob’s site here.

The world’s first wrist computer system, released in 1984, consisted of a Seiko watch part and a separate “controller” console with a built-in printer.

The user could input BASIC programing with a keyboard (sold separately) and enjoy playing games. It also included a memo function, a telephone directory, an address book, and a scheduling function.

A separately-sold pocket-sized keyboard allowed operation on the go. The watch, controller, and keyboard were all box-shaped with straight lines for a unified style. The contrasting light and dark two-color gray base was accented with orange buttons.
