Impressive Jack-O-Lantern display last week at Transylvania University!

Via Scott Moore and Storyful

Hundreds of pumpkins adorned the steps of Transylvania University’s Old Morrison building in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 23 as part of the university’s 12th annual PumpkinMania event.
The university said it was sourcing the pumpkins from Black Soil, an organization “connecting black Kentucky farmers with their agricultural heritage and expanding the market for their products.”

The replicant Roy Batty’s iconic leather trench coat from Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner, has been missing since the film wrapped in 1982.

It seemed too good to be true when someone contacted the UK’s Propstore and claimed that they had it. It turned out to be legit. The coat was apparently part of a charity auction soon after filming and the coat had been lost to history from there. After the owner of it passed away, the coat was acquired by the Propstore.

In this Tested video, Adam Savage gets a chance to see the coat, learn more about it, and discuss the import and story telling that garments like this add to a production.

From the GitHub release page:

This is CircuitPython 8.0.0-beta.4, a beta release for 8.0.0. It is relatively stable, but there will be further additions and fixes before final release.

WARNING: The flash partitioning for 2MB and 4MB flash ESP32 and ESP32-C3 boards has changed since 8.0.0-beta.2. When you load 8.0.0-beta.3 or later over beta.2 (or vice versa), on these boards, CIRCUITPY will be erased and reformatted.

WARNING: The flash partitioning for the Raspberry Pi Pico W has changed since 8.0.0-beta.1. When you load 8.0.0-beta.2 or later over beta.1 (or vice versa), on the Pico W, CIRCUITPY will be erased and reformatted.

Notable changes since 8.0.0-beta.3

  • ESP32-C3 builds now work again.
  • Raspberry Pi Pico W can act as a server, and can use static IP addresses.

Notable changes to 8.0.0 since 7.3.0

Functionality additions

  • Added WiFi workflow with browser-based device discovery, filesystem browsing, upload, download, file editing, serial/REPL connection (available only on Espressif for now).
  • Added a one-line status bar, which displays connection status, last exception, and version on a terminal window title or on the top line of an attached display. Support for status bar display is also being added to the Mu and Thonny editors.
  • .env file in CIRCUITPY specifies WiFI connection parameters, BLE name, and other startup values.
  • dotenv support: os.getenv() values are set by values in .env file. Values can be fetched from other dotenv-format files.
  • WiFi functionality implemented on the Raspberry Pi Pico W.
  • Revised Espressif camera support, now available on ESP32, ESP32-S2, and ESP32-S3.
  • Bulk analog input: analogbufio (available only on RP2040 for now).
  • Pin state can be preserved during deep sleep (available only on Espressif for now).
  • Allow setting USB VID, PID, manufacturer, and product ids at runtime.
  • Enabled collections.deque on most builds.
  • MP3Decoder and WaveFile can now take a filename instead of an open file.
  • AnalogIn values are full range from 0 to 65535, instead of having zeros on low-order bits.
  • In-place firmware update (dualbank) capability may be disabled in favor of a larger CIRCUITPY drive.
  • Added TileGrid.contains().
  • Added os.utime().
  • Added coproc module, for running programs on an on-chip co-processor. Currently available for the RISC-V core on the ESP32-S2 and ESP32-S3.

Compatibility changes

  • PulseOut no longer accepts a PWMOut. Use a Pin instead.
  • Auto-brightness support in displayio and framebufferio has been removed. It was never implemented completely.
  • OneWire is only in onewireio, and is no longer in busio or bitbangio.
  • gamepadshift has been removed: use keypad.ShiftRegisterKeys instead.
  • Print out whole-number floats exactly and correctly.
  • Restored rainbowio and onewireio to a number of boards. Some boards still have rainbowio turned off for space reasons.
  • i2ctarget.I2CTarget is the new name for i2cperipheral.I2CPeripheral. Accept both for now. I2CPeripheral will be removed in 9.0.0.
  • The property supervisor.runtime.ble_workflow replaces supervisor.disable_ble_workflow().
  • The property supervisor.runtime.next_stack_limit replaces supervisor.set_next_stack_limit().
  • The property supervisor.runtime.rgb_status_brightness replaces supervisor.set_rgb_status_brightness().

The deadliest pandemic on record, the bubonic plague changed human populations. Now, researchers share how genes passed down by survivors may contribute to autoimmune disorders. Smithsonian explains how the bubonic plague has influenced human DNA.

But by using modern techniques for analyzing ancient DNA, the team was able to examine the remains of people who lived before, during and after the Black Death. They studied the genes of 318 people buried in three London cemeteries between 1000 and 1500, as well as 198 people from Denmark who lived between 850 and 1800, per the Times.

The team looked for genetic variants that were less prevalent in people killed by the Black Death and more common in people who lived after the pandemic, since these might have contributed to immunity, per Stat News. They found four variants fitting this pattern in both the British and Danish groups.

Adafruit High Power Infrared LED Emitter – STEMMA JST PH 2mm

*pew* *pew*! This board is like a little ray gun for infrared light, with two high powered LED outputs. When controlled with the onboard N-Channel FET driver, you’ll be blasting 100mA-200mA of current pulsing through each LED for 10+ meters of range! This is the easiest way to get great IR emitter range without wiring up a bunch of parts.

By using a 2mm pitch STEMMA JST PH cable with headers or alligator clips on the end, you can easily wire this board up without any soldering at all.

This board features a power transistor so you just need to provide about 3-5V DC power to the V+ power in, ground for ground, and then a 3-5V logic level signal on the input pin. When the pin is high, the LEDs are on, when the signal pin is low, the LEDs are off. Since humans don’t see in IR, there’s a red LED that will let you know when the IR LEDs are lit. Two LEDs are pre-soldered to the PCB, one pointing up and one pointing out. If you want even MORE coverage, there’s a spot to solder in a separate 5mm IR LED (not included).

Braden Sunwold of Bare Naked Embedded made this awesome Jack-O-Lantern prop. A creepy but cool addition to any Halloween scene, the prop includes our Adafruit Animated Eyes Bonnet for Raspberry Pi

When my brother in law was a kid, he loved decorating the yard for Halloween. Since recently buying their first home, he wants to one day turn it into a Halloween attraction for people all over the city. When I heard this, the maker in me couldn’t resist getting involved. After all, Halloween is prime time for people like us, providing an excuse to spend money on new toys and tools. After scrolling for inspiration on Adafruit, I came across these LCD eyes and knew I wanted make some sort of eye following Halloween prop. And thus, Gourdan was born.

I recently saw an ad for the Gyro-Cut, a paper cutting tool designed for collaging, scrap booking, anything where you’re cutting out a lot of complex, irregular shapes. I decided to buy one.

Meh. It’s not terrible, and you definitely get better with time, but I was not all that impressed with it.

My reactions comport with a number of YouTube reviews, including this one. At the end of the day, I don’t cut out that many paper shapes that I can’t handle with small paper scissors. But your mileage may vary.

Meh. It’s not terrible, and you definitely get better with time, but I was not all that impressed with it.

My reactions comport with a number of YouTube reviews, including this one. At the end of the day, I don’t cut out that many paper shapes that I can’t handle with small paper scissors. But your mileage may vary.

Reusable groceries shopping list by Mupoc Thingiverse

Mupoc shared this project on Thingiverse!

A reusable shopping list with common groceries. Once you have bought an item on the list you can cover it up using the flaps on either side of the list.

I have made 3 different versions with text depending on whether you value your baby, pet or printer most and 2 blank versions.

I have included 2 lengths of flaps. the short should line up with the edge of the backplate while the long overhangs a few mm.

the single column blank requires 15 flaps, all other backplate require 29 flaps.

Art and advertising have been intertwined for a long time. However, the world of art is much different from the world of advertising. NPR shares how The Los Angeles County Museum of Art makes you question what is considered art and why.

The LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) show is called Objects of Desire: Photography and the Language of Advertising. Curator Rebecca Morse says the reconfiguration started in the 1970s, when “contemporary art photography had developed suffocating parameters.” It had to be black and white, had to measure 8×10, “and anything else wasn’t considered art.” To break those barriers, they took real ads from magazines and billboards, re-photographed and manipulated them, and got them into galleries and museums. Why? “To get viewers to look at them more critically than you would if you were just flipping through Vogue.”

WSU researchers have found drones can help struggling salmon populations based on their collaborative study with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife of the Wenatchee River during the September – November 2020 Chinook spawning season:

In addition to a one-time count, researchers can use drone images to look at changes in habitat over time, including mitigations humans put in place to help salmon, which range from planting shrubs to removing whole dams.

“These technologies will give us more data to really find out if what we’re doing is working,” said Alex Fremier, study co-author and an associate professor in the WSU School of the Environment. “A drone provides a bird’s eye view and high-resolution images. Because we can get so much information from these images, we could be more cost effective and help determine if a restoration project helped build salmon habitat.”
