Zellyn Hunter has been looking to recreate the digital art of Georg Nees in the 1960s. Thee current effort focuses on Nees’ 1964 work “23 ecke” (literally 23 corners or 23 vertice polygons).

From the 5th to the 19th of February, 1965, the world’s first exhibition of digital art was staged in the Studiengalerie of the University of Stuttgart. Georg Nees displayed a dozen or so drawings on the walls, and in the accompanying nineteenth edition of Max Bense’s booklet series rot (“red”), Nees provided short descriptions in his usual clear style. 23 ecke was one of the works displayed.

Through careful research in rot and other references, along with programmatic trials of algorithms that may have been used,  Hunter finally finds the algorithm and random seed used to generate the work (source on GitHub).

What is design fiction, and how does it differ from science fiction? explores the disctinction over on the amazing site Sci-Fi Interfaces. Heres more on Sci-Fi Interfaces:

If you’re not familiar, design fiction is a practice that focuses on speculative artifacts to raise issues. While leading the interactions program at The Royal College of Art, Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby catalyzed the practice.

“It thrives on imagination and aims to open up new perspectives on what are sometimes called wicked problems, to create spaces for discussion and debate about alternative ways of being, and to inspire and encourage people’s imaginations to flow freely. Design speculations can act as a catalyst for collectively redefining our relationship to reality.”

Sam Altman recently refreshed a debate in AI etiquette. He acknowledged that adding niceties to your prompts, while well intentioned, do add to processing cost. Is it worth it? The consensus (even from Altman himself) generally seems to be that, yes, we should be nice to our AI companions.

Whether AI is accelerating us towards an inevitable energy crisis is yet to be seen, but a few “pleases” and “thank-yous” won’t tip the scale.  As with humans, politeness might get you farther on the first try, leading to fewer prompts and ultimately less energy.

New York Times discusses both sides in Saying ‘Thank You’ to ChatGPT Is Costly. But Maybe It’s Worth the Price.:

“While it is true that an A.I. has no feelings, my concern is that any sort of nastiness that starts to fill our interactions will not end well,” he [screenwriter Scott Z. Burns] said.

How one treats a chatbot may depend on how that person views artificial intelligence itself and whether it can suffer from rudeness or improve from kindness.

But there’s another reason to be kind. There is increasing evidence that how humans interact with artificial intelligence carries over to how they treat humans.

From Microsoft – Why Using a Polite Tone with AI Matters

It should, says Microsoft’s Kurtis Beavers, a director on the design team for Microsoft Copilot. It’s not that your AI chatbot feels appreciative when you say please and thank you. But using basic etiquette when interacting with AI, Beavers tells WorkLab, helps generate respectful, collaborative outputs

From Forbes Why You Should Be Polite To ChatGPT And Other AIs

Most compellingly, when researchers tested different levels of politeness across tasks like summarization and language understanding benchmarks, they discovered that more polite prompts consistently outperformed rude ones, with some models showing up to a 30% drop in performance with impolite prompts. The research also revealed that different AI models respond to politeness in culturally nuanced ways, suggesting that just as with human interactions, cultural context matters in how we communicate with AI.

Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Biology recently hosted Niels Ringstad, a cell biology professor at NYU to discuss how microbes effect the neurobiology of worms. The talk titled “Modulation of Behavior by Host-Microbe Interactions” goes into detail about his lab’s study and possible connections to human health.

The nematode C. elegans serves as an ideal organism for studying how effects on the animal nervous system can alter behavior, as the simple nervous system of C. elegans functions remarkably similar to our own. Instead of the billions of neurons that humans have, C. elegans has just 302, which have been mapped in close detail. This allows researchers like Ringstad to utilize C. elegans as a powerful tool to identify the neural circuits and molecular mechanisms behind animal behavior.

Austin Allen shares how to build your own 3D-printed pet food dispenser with a food level sensor. via hackster.io

In this project, I built a 3D-printed pet food dispenser with a food level sensor and RGB LED light bar to indicate the fill level! As your pet eats the foot in the open tray in the bottom of the dispenser, food in the upper reservoir gradually falls to keep that space filled, so your pet doesn’t run out of food to eat. An RGB LED light strip shines behind a 3D printed “light bar” to indicate the fill level (green is sufficiently filled, yellow is getting close to empty, and red means you need to refill the food reservoir.)

NEW PRODUCTS – Snap-on USB Dongle Cases / Enclosures

Snap-on Translucent USB Dongle Case – 48 x 22 x 12mm

This simple Snap-on USB Dongle Case / Enclosure is an inexpensive way to turn a bare PCB into a more durable project (as long as the PCB design shape is under your control). For much less than it would cost to get a custom 3D printed case, and way way less than injection molding!

This case seems to be designed for USB power monitoring boards kinda like this one. It’s made of grey translucent plastic, so you can have a small TFT or OLED or LEDs. There’s three pieces, two snap over the PCB to capture it in place and one can be used as a USB A port cap. We also like there’s a button lever – use a low cost tactile switch as a reset button or mode switcher!

While the original was intended for use with a USB A plug and socket, you could probably be flexible with what connectors you’re using as long as they’re smaller. For example, we designed a board with a USB A plug on one end, and terminal blocks/breakout pads on the other.

This case is great if you want to protect your USB dongle from everyday usage, but note that it is not waterproof or weatherproof.

No boards, cables, or accessories are included. You’ll need to design your PCB to a specific shape for it to fit snuggly inside – we used the diagram below plus calipers to get something satisfactory with only one revision tweak.

This case seems to be designed for USB to RS-485 adapter kinda like this one. It’s made of clear translucent plastic, so you can have a small TFT or OLED or LEDs. There’s two pieces that snap over the PCB to capture it in place.

While the original was intended for use as a converter with USB A plug and terminal block connectors, you could probably be flexible with what connectors you’re using as long as they’re smaller.

“Stories have very simple shapes, ones that computers can understand”

Kurt Vonnegut studied anthropology, not English. So he had a scientific lens he viewed the world through. Watch this lecture from 2004 where he maps out the shape of stories with trademark wit and humor.

Great find by Flowing Data:

Vonnegut identifies four stories in the following video (and in a different lecture as a younger man), but poking around the internet, he seems to have illustrated eight at some point. I can’t find where the remaining four came from though.

The best part is that the ideas he charts are from his rejected master’s thesis, which he described in Palm Sunday:

What has been my prettiest contribution to my culture? I would say it was a master’s thesis in anthropology which as rejected by the University of Chicago a long time ago. It was rejected because it was so simple and looked like too much fun. One must not be too playful.

Blade Runner 2029 (2017) pretty successfully re-created Rachel from Blade Runner (1982). The fully digital character emerged from the shadows as if stepping out of some late-night VHS viewing of the Ridley Scott masterpiece. Re-creation, while laborious, isn’t creatively difficult. For other aspects of the 2017 sequel, simple re-creation was impossible. The soundtrack for the 1982 movie still looms as one of the great achievements of cinematic musical storytelling, written and performed by Vangelis. Hans Zimmer, hired by director Denis Villeneuve to write music for Blade Runner 2049, had a long set of difficult creative decisions. Here’s an exploration of the music of the 2017 sequel from the SoundWorks Collection, via Synthopia:

Part Jurassic Park part Game of Thrones a company claims to have resurrected the Dire Wolf. Named Romulus, Remus and…Khaleesi; the young pups have modified modern gray wolf DNA with the physical traits of the dire wolf, a species extinct for 12,000 years. The company is a start up, Colossal Biosciences, run by Ben Lamm and George Church, and they are looking to other “charismatic megafauna” to bring back with eyes on the wooly mammoth.  The New Yorker takes a deep dive into the project

From a statement on Business Wire:

The three litters of Colossal’s dire wolves include two adolescent males (Romulus and Remus) and one female puppy (Khaleesi). Colossal also birthed two litters of red wolves from three different genetic founder lines. These litters include one adolescent female red wolf (Hope) and three male red wolf puppies (Blaze, Cinder, and Ash).

“Preserving, expanding, and testing genetic diversity should be done well before important endangered animal species like the red wolf are lost. Another source of ecosystem variety stems from our new technologies to de-extinct lost genes, including deep ancient DNA sequencing, polyphyletic trait analyses, multiplex germline editing, and cloning. The dire wolf is an early example of this, including the largest number of precise genomic edits in a healthy vertebrate so far. A capability that is growing exponentially,” said Harvard geneticist and co-founder of Colossal, Dr. George Church.

What happens in a yeast population? Greg Lang, associate professor of biological sciences at Lehigh University detailed his findings in his “Genome evolution in laboratory populations of yeast” talk at John Hopkins University‘s Department of Biology.

In the first project Lang described, he subjected haploid, asexually reproducing yeast to normal growth conditions — 30-degrees-Celsius temperatures and glucose-rich media — and let evolution play out for 1,000 generations. Three populations were isolated: one “ancestral” early clone from generation zero, one “intermediate” clone from the middle of the experiment and one “late” clone from the thousandth generation. To determine the relative fitness of these clones, Lang co-cultured the different yeast populations and measured their resulting growth rates. In nearly every population, the late clones exhibited higher fitness than the intermediate and early clones, indicating adaptive evolution. However, there was one outlier that did not exhibit this expected phenomenon.

Researchers from Columbia Engineering discovered how nano plastics form. The study published in Nature Communications details their findings.

In a new study, scientists have delineated the molecular process that causes these small pieces to break off in such large quantities. Since hitting the market 75 years ago, plastic has become ubiquitous — and so, presumably, have nanoplastics. As it turns out, the qualities that make plastic strong and flexible also make it prone to forming nanoplastics – this is true for 75-80% of all plastics used, which are termed as semicrystalline polymers in the community. Sanat Kumar, Michael Bykhovsky and Charo Gonzalez-Bykhovsky Professor of Chemical Engineering at Columbia Engineering, led the research effort.

Weird times call for weird writers. Luckily, there’s a whole genre of weird writers to choose from. Weird fiction is more than a centiury old at this point, but the tradition is alive and well. Here’s more from Jason Ockert on LitHub:

Millhauser’s stories almost always disorient right off the bat. The first story in We Others is called “The Slap.” The piece opens when a man, Walter Lasher, is approached by a stranger in a parking lot and is slapped hard in the face. The attack is, apparently, unprovoked and a random act of violence. From the onset, we have some questions: What did Walter do to deserve this? How is he going to respond to the attack? Who is the Slapper?

In these stories, aliens are landing, ghosts are narrating, the art of magic is alive, a knife thrower comes to town, and yes, characters are slapped in the face. Shocking a reader at the beginning of a story as a means of tricking them onto the page is not difficult. The hard part is to coax the reader along—sentence by sentence—and the greatness of Millhauser’s work is not in its disorientation but in the way that he re-orients you. “The Slap,” for example, is a pattern story. This style of story takes advantage of escalation—first Walter Lasher is slapped, then Robert Sutliff is slapped, then Charles Kraus is slapped!—until the strangeness of getting slapped feels familiar. In fact, a reader starts to wonder why more people aren’t getting slapped.

In this wonderful Dug North video, he turns a can of evaporated milk into a steam engine. The design is based on Hero of Alexandria’s Aeolipile and the scant instructions Dug used came from a 62-year-old issue of Mechanix Illustrated. Unlike Hero’s design, this version of the Aeolipile is vertically, rather than horizontally aligned.

Most of the build is straight-forward, using common tools. After Dug builds his engine, he struggles to troubleshoot and tune it properly, but with a number of tweaks, he finally gets it going, and man, does it go.

An international team of scientists using a collection of 66 radio telescopes at the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in the Atacama Desert observed the star-forming ring of gas and dust known as the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). SyFy Wire shares the details of their research.

The intensity of gravitational forces around a black hole sends gas, dust, and other material spinning violently around the event horizon, sending shockwaves through the morass. The CMZ is an area of intense interest, and these observations provided a view of the galactic center 100 times sharper than ever before. In their highly detailed observations, astronomers discovered previously unseen molecular filaments spinning out from the CMZ.

NEW PRODUCT – Raspberry Pi Pico 2W with Header

Raspberry Pi Pico 2W is Raspberry Pi Foundation’s update to their popular RP2040-based wireless ico board, now built on RP2350: their new high-performance, secure microcontroller. With a higher core clock speed, double the on-chip SRAM (512KB), double the on-board flash memory (4MB!), more powerful Arm M33 cores, new security and low-power features, and upgraded interfacing capabilities, the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 delivers a significant performance and feature boost while retaining hardware and software compatibility with earlier members of the Raspberry Pi Pico series.

This version is ready to plug into a breadboard or socket, with pre-soldered headers!

Raspberry Pi Pico 2W is just like the Pico 2W but adds pre-soldered headers and a 3-pin debug connector. Raspberry Pi Pico 2W brings WiFi + BLE wireless networking to the Pico 2 platform while retaining complete pin compatibility with its older sibling. It adds on-board single-band 2.4GHz wireless interfaces (802.11n) using the Infineon CYW43439 while retaining the Pico form factor. The on-board 2.4GHz wireless interface has the following features:

  • Wireless (802.11n), Single-band (2.4 GHz) WiFi with WPA3 and Soft Access Point supporting up to 4 clients
  • Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth Classic – note not all programming methods support BLE or BT
  • The wireless interface is connected via SPI to the RP2350 microcontroller and has a micropython/circuitpython/Arduino driver for wireless capability

Due to pin limitations (the Pico2  brings out all the GPIO) some of the wireless interface pins are shared with the exposed pads:

  • The SPI CLK is shared with VSYS monitor, so only when there isn’t an SPI transaction in progress can VSYS be read via the ADC.
  • The Infineon CYW43439 SPI DIN/DOUT and IRQ all share one pin on the RP2040. Only when an SPI transaction isn’t in progress is it suitable to check for IRQs.
  • The interface typically runs at 33MHz.

For best wireless performance, the antenna should be in free space. For instance, putting metal under or close by the antenna can reduce its performance both in terms of gain and bandwidth. Adding grounded metal to the sides of the antenna can improve the antenna’s bandwidth.

The unique dual-core, dual-architecture capability of RP2350 allows users to choose between a pair of industry-standard Arm Cortex-M33 cores and a pair of open-hardware Hazard3 RISC-V cores. You can use either Arm or RISC-V cores, so this is a great way to dabble in RISC-V development with an affordable board that has lots of peripherals. The M33 has an FPU, and is ‘basically’ 2x as fast as the M0+ of the RP2040 when we speed-tested it.

Not only is the Pico 2 twice as fast, it has twice as much RAM, 520KB compared to 264KB. The Pico also has twice as much FLASH memory, 4MB instead of 2MB, which will make it a much better board for CircuitPython usage where the internal memory is used to store files. There’s also one more PIO blocks (3 blocks with 4 state machines apiece, rather than 2) so you can do even more pin twiddling at once. For folks who want to use the RP2350 to generate high frequency output signals like DVI display output, you can use the HSTX (high speed transmission) peripheral rather than PIO.

For customers who wanted a more secure microcontroller for product design, the RP2350 provides a comprehensive security architecture, built around Arm TrustZone for Cortex-M, and incorporating signed boot, 8KB of antifuse OTP for key storage, SHA-256 acceleration, a hardware TRNG, and fast glitch detectors. These features, including the secure boot ROM, are extensively documented and available to all users without restriction: this transparent approach, which contrasts with the “security through obscurity” offered by legacy vendors, allows professional users to integrate RP2350, and Raspberry Pi Pico 2, into products with confidence.

Programmable in C / C++ and CircuitPython/MicroPython, and with detailed documentation, Raspberry Pi Pico 2 is the ideal microcontroller board for enthusiasts and professional developers alike. It makes an excellent upgrade to the RP2040, with lots of back-compatibility and some excellent upgrades.

Please note: The Pico 2W comes with the A2 version of the RP2350, which is affected by the E9 erratum. This erratum affects some uses of GPIO and PIO such as high-impedance inputs and the internal pulldowns. You may need to use 8.2K or smaller resistors if pull-downs are required. At this time, Sept 9 2024, there is no other version of the RP2350 available – only the A2 version.
