MIDI stands for Music Instrument Digital Interface. It’s the standard communication method for all things music. It’s the way an instrument can talk to a computer. Every musician working in the digital space uses MIDI. Laurie Anderson’s violin? MIDI. Chemical Brothers? MIDI. But why might a DIY MIDI project be useful for you? Here’s more, from MIDI for Makers by Liz Clark:

MIDI is dependable, predictable, reliable and at this point is usually plug and play without too much fuss. This also means that it’s approachable for folks to build their own MIDI devices.

There are a lot of aftermarket MIDI devices available, so why would you want to build your own? When you build your own MIDI controller, you can design it specifically for what you need. If you aren’t quite sure what you want to do with MIDI, you can experiment and test things before committing to a full build. Additionally, you can share your MIDI project’s details with the community for other musicians to benefit from.

MIT LearningControl 01 press 0

An AI for easier drone control with less data. From MIT:

Researchers from MIT and Stanford University have devised a new machine-learning approach that could be used to control a robot, such as a drone or autonomous vehicle, more effectively and efficiently in dynamic environments where conditions can change rapidly.

“The focus of our work is to learn intrinsic structure in the dynamics of the system that can be leveraged to design more effective, stabilizing controllers,” says Navid Azizan, the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton Assistant Professor in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), and a member of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS). “By jointly learning the system’s dynamics and these unique control-oriented structures from data, we’re able to naturally create controllers that function much more effectively in the real world.”

MIT Social Board Game 01 press 0

Where are all the new board games? Board games are fun and bring people together. In cases like Monopoly or Life, board games can also reflect cultural norms or values. This workshop from MIT wants to explore that further and harness it for good.

Via MIT News:

Over two weeks, the instructors ran participants through a crash course in the history and mechanics of board game design, and then set them up with materials, fabrication tools, online resources, and the goal of delivering a playable game at the workshop’s final Friday showcase. Their message to the fledgling designers: Any idea has gameplay potential.

In particular, the workshop emphasizes the idea that games can be a gateway into social and cultural topics that otherwise may be challenging to engage with in daily life.

How do you evergreen special effects? If you’re Ridley Scott making Blade Runner, you do it through restraint and clever framing. If you’re George Lucas making Star Wars you do it through making images so iconic we kinda don’t care if they look dated and, in fact, aren’t to pleased when they get updated. Case in point are the animated sections of Star Wars: A New Hope. Here’s Larry Cuba on how he designed whose memorable animations, from CDM:

Cuba reveals some fascinating nuggets:

  • He worked directly from matte paintings and concept art and full-scale models (traditions that have come back into vogue lately on productions like The Mandalorian)
  • Drawing might have been a bit more work, but he’s actually able to animate and rotate the resulting model in real time – stunning stuff for the 70s (with knobs and dials – hey MIDI fans!)
  • There’s an extensive, elaborate digitization process translating physical models to digital ones – here with a pen, though see also the recent advances like Apple’s AR tools on iOS (which let you scan, though… this manual approach is cleaner and still sometimes better)
  • To translate to film, they had to manually expose each frame. There were no after-the-fact animations on the film.

By using multiple slides, and multiple light sources an animation effect akin to Neon signage is produced. The Pico is responsible for alternating between these sheets and controlling what colors appear from the LEDs. Sprixels has managed to daisy chain seven signs together using just one Pico as a controller.

While virtual reality was the hottest trend of the 1990s, it was nowhere near ready for the mass-market (some would argue it still isn’t). The headsets were gigantic, comically so. The graphics were surprisingly primitive. And the costs in both dollars and computing power were tremendous. The Virtual Boy took the popular idea of what virtual reality was and attempted to replicate it for $179.99. The result was a device that basically did nothing virtual reality promised to do.

Collider lists 10 of the most underrated science fiction movies of the 21st century. While they may be labelled as underrated, some weren’t marketed well and others were just ahead of their time (no sci-fi pun intended).

The 21st century has had an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great science fiction movies. Not only did the last quarter-century feature the first science fiction film to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture thanks to The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once, but it saw the return of legendary franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, Mad Max, Alien, Predator, and Blade Runner.

While it’s great to see new sequels fulfilling the high expectations of fans, originality is always where science fiction fans turn to great new stories. Here are the ten most underrated science fiction mysteries of the 21st century, ranked.

Artist, filmmaker, and maker, Van Neistat, offers this video of his interesting approach to organization. The video has a very Tom Sachs Ten Bullets vibe as it humorously runs through a series of 5 of Van’s organization principles: No Stacks/One-Handed, Kit Your Sh!t, Use Organizational Talisman, Learn to Build Shelves (and build shelves), and Customize.

Some great ideas here — like never stacking non-related items, one-handed shelf access, and using zipper pouches to organize your kit. “Organizational talisman” is his term for what I call homely tools, essential bands, binder clips, push-pins and other often over-looked shop essentials. And, as a bonus, check out his clever idea for jumper cable storage next to your car battery.

R211 Cutler SQ

Wonderful personal history by Joshua Cutler. From a young age Cutler pursued his interest in engineering and trains. Through college and after graduation he was able to turn his passion for the MTA’s new R211 into a career!

Via CUNYverse:

Sometimes, things do not go exactly according to plan – and sometimes you even get a head start on the goals you’ve set for yourself. Through City College’s career office, I landed an interview as an intern at the MTA. Although I did not get the position I initially applied for, I continued to communicate with the people I met during my interview.

Finally, in March 2023, the R211A prototype cars began passenger service testing, and of course I rode on the ceremonial run! After having spent so much time reading about and dreaming of working on the R211 project, the ceremonial run was the perfect culmination of all my efforts, and it was a day that I had only dreamt about for so many years!

James gives an excellent introduction to hand planers, their safe use, and their limitations. As usually for a Nubs video, there are many excellent tips here, too, like how to make “winding sticks” that can help you eyeball the areas of a twisted board surface you need to plane to level.

NEW PRODUCT – Adafruit Matrix Portal S3 CircuitPython Powered Internet Display

Folks love our wide selection of RGB matrices and accessories for making custom colorful LED displays… and our RGB Matrix Shields and FeatherWings can be quickly soldered together to make the wiring much easier. But what if we made it even easier than that? Like, no solder, no wiring, just instant plug-and-play? Dream no more – with the Adafruit Matrix Portal S3 add-on for RGB Matrices, there’s never been an easier way to create powerful Internet-connected LED displays.

You can plug directly into the back of any HUB-75 compatible display (all the ones we stock will work) from 16×32 up to 64×64 or use the stock 2×8 IDC cables to plug into the front. Use the included screws to attach the power cable to the power plugs with a common screwdriver, then power it with any USB C power supply. Chain dozens of displays for long stretches, or you can panelize them in a grid for bigger displays. For larger projects, power the matrices with a separate 5V power adapter.

Then code up your project in CircuitPython or Arduino, our Protomatter matrix library works great on the ESP32-S3 chipset, knowing that you’ve got the wiring and level shifting all handled. Here’s what you get:

  • ESP32-S3 processor, 8 MB flash, 2 MB of SRAM, with full Arduino or CircuitPython support
  • WiFi  and Bluetooth LE baked right in, full Arduino support. CircuitPython only supports WiFi at this time, not BLE on the S3 chip.
  • USB Type C connector for data and power connectivity
  • I2C STEMMA QT connector for plug-n-play use of any of our STEMMA QT devices or sensors can also be used with any Grove I2C devices using this adapter cable
  • JST 3-pin connector that also has analog input for quick connection with any JST PH 2.0mm pitch cable.
  • LIS3DH accelerometer for digital sand projects or detecting taps/orientation.
  • GPIO breakout strip – has reset, boot selection, TX debug output, and 6 GPIO including 4 analog inputs with PWM, SPI, or I2S support for adding other hardware.
  • Address E line jumper for use with 64×64 matrices (check your matrix to see which pin is used for address E, we default to pin 8
  • Two user interface buttons + one reset button
  • Indicator NeoPixel and red LED
  • Green power indicator LEDs for both 3V and 5V power
  • 2×10 socket connector fits snugly into 2×8 HUB75 ports without worrying about ‘off by one’ errors
  • 2×8 IDC plug connector works with standard cables that come with matrices.

The Matrix Portal uses an Espressif ESP32-S3 Wi-Fi+BLE chipset and has dropped the SAMD51 from the original Matrix Portal due to silicon shortages. But turns out the S3 is really great at doing all the work of the original all on its own:

  • The S3 has a parallel output drive peripheral, which means that controlling the matrix is done without bitbanging.
  • The S3 has two cores, so one can be dedicated to WiFi networking or matrix control while the other runs your code.
  • With native USB, it’s easy to have it act like a keyboard, or mouse, or MIDI device, and it also has plenty of I2C, SPI, I2S, UART, and analog inputs.
  • Lots of memory: 8MB of Flash means plenty of space for code, files, GIFs, and more. 2MB of PSRAM means you can read and parse a lot of IoT data and still have plenty of RAM for the matrix display buffers.
  • The only real thing missing from the original Matrix Portal is the S3 does not have an analog output DAC pin; we recommend an I2S amplifier for audio instead.

Comes with one fully programmed and assembled MatrixPortal, preprogrammed with a basic display demo for 32×64 LED matrices.

Does not come with an RGB Matrix (use any HUB75 compatible matrix) or a USB type C power supply!
