Tears of the kingdom developers blogroll 1685552393672

While it’s no graphical power house, The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom still manages big time flex. Arguably the Switch was underpowered at launch 7 years ago so how does TotK pull it all off?

The real magic is under the hood. IGN talks to 5 different developers to get 5 different takes on what seems most impressive:

But developers are able to have an even deeper appreciation for the mastery on display in Tears of the Kingdom because of their own personal experiences with game development. While you or I can rightfully celebrate the game for everything we love about it, there’s something more powerful about hearing praise from folks who know a little bit about what’s actually going on under the hood. For instance, we’ve seen a handful of devs go nuts for the game’s physics engine alone.

Regardless of what type of maker you are, you likely work with lots of different types and sizes of tape: painter’s tape, masking tape, Kapton tape, gaffer’s tape, duct tape, etc.

The common storage solution is the rod that has all of these tape rolls slotted onto it. If you’ve used this method, you know how annoying it is when you need the roll on the middle of the rod.

In this Tested video, Adam Savage tells the story of having his mind blown by going to a theater in the Midwest and seeing how they stored their tape. They stacked the rolls on thin shelves. The height of the shelves was designed so that each shelf could store a 2″ and a 1″ tape, or three 1″ tapes, etc.

One of the cool things after this video came out was watching makers immediately responding by making such a simple shelf and posting the results to social media.

And people shared alternative storage methods:

Dji inspire 3 drone review

This pricey drone is ready for the big screen. Replacing sweeping crane shots, eagle eye top downs and more; Hollywood is only going to be turning to drones more and more. Watch the review from Peter Lindgren on YouTube and learn more from No Film School:

It’s safe to say that while some things about drone cinematography remain the same, there’s quite a bit more to learn and understand these days — especially if you’re looking to invest and launch a $16K drone like the DJI Inspire 3 into the sky. So let’s take a look at a recent hands-on review of this 8K capable Hollywood standard and explore everything you need to know before flying one yourself for the first time.

Welcome to drone day on the Adafruit blog. Every Monday we deliver the latest news, products and more from the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), quadcopter and drone communities. (Video) This week we’ve been doing some more toy hacking on a 2017 edition Teddy Ruxpin – this toy has a SONIX SN7001 plus an nRF51 module for the Bluetooth LE connectivity to an app.

Why not an all-in-one BLE chipset? Well perhaps now-a-days you’d be able to run the whole thing off of an nRF52 or nRF53 but at the time the SONIX chip was probably a well-trod core for many toys, with ready-to-go SDK and a Cortex M4 for audio / graphics handling, and the nRF51 was one of the only reliable BLE chips available.

You may also want to add BLE to an existing design, DigiKey has lots of BLE modules that you can use either for standalone or as a ‘BLE friend forever’ – a.k.a. BFF! Let’s check out what’s available for your modulating needs.

NPR shares a summer reading list that has something for everyone. So whether you’re on the couch enjoying the AC or sitting on the beach enjoying the sun, these titles will add to your summer fun.

Memorial Day is often considered the unofficial start to summer. Many kids are entering the last weeks of school, pools start to open, and vacations from work are on the horizon. It’s a time of the year that many associate with a somewhat slower pace affording, maybe, a little more free time to read. We asked some of our regular book critics what soon-to-be-published titles they are most looking forward to reading this summer. Here’s what they said.

Sana Amanat is an American comic book editor and VP of character development at Marvel, whose credits include Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, and Captain Marvel. She also co-created Marvel’s first solo series to feature a Muslim female superhero, Ms. Marvel.

Here’s more on Sana Amanat from Vogue:

Nearly a decade later, [Sana Amanat] has been a force for change. The characters she’s brought to the fore may have supernatural powers, but their lives are informed by real-world issues. Whether politics, race relations, sexism, or issues of class, their stories are about more than fending off bad guys. Take the case of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, Amanat’s most personal creation. A Pakistani-American teen who discovers that she has the power to shape-shift, Khan gradually learns that outside appearances don’t dictate self-worth (though her uniform of lightning bolt minidress, scarf, and tights certainly makes for a bold look). The parallels to Amanat’s life are obvious. “[Kamala] lives in Jersey City, and she looks across the river and sees these powerful beautiful superheroes who are kicking butt and looking great doing it. She wants to be just like them and thinks that’s what being powerful is, it’s this individual who looks nothing like her,” says Amanat. “It’s important that we find a way to cultivate our own strength and formulate that identity on our own terms. The story of Kamala Khan is very much about that.”

NEW PRODUCT – NeoKey Socket Breakout for CHOC Key Switches with NeoPixel – For CHOC Compatible Switches

The only thing better than a nice mechanical key, is one that also can glow any color of the rainbow – and that’s what the Adafruit NeoKey Breakout will let you do! This little 0.75″ x 0.95″ PCB can fit one Kailh CHOC or compatible switch and make it easy to use with a breadboard or perfboard.

The breakout has a Kailh CHOC socket, which means you can plug in any CHOC-compatible switch instead of soldering it in. You may need a little glue to keep the switch in place; hot glue or a dot of epoxy worked fine for us. We also place a 1N4148 signal diode in series with the switch, so you can create key-grid matrices without worrying about ghosted keys.

5756 Neo Key Choc iso 01 ORIG 2023 05

5756 Neo Key Choc iso 02 ORIG 2023 05

Each breakout also has a single reverse-mount NeoPixel pointing up through the spot where many switches would have an LED to shine through. The input and output of the pixel are broken out so you can ‘chain’ these boards together and control them as one NeoPixel strand.

There’s plenty of flexibility for any kind of use; each board has the following pin out:

  • VDD (+) The power pin for the NeoPixel; provide 3 to 5VDC
  • GND (-The ground power pin for the NeoPixel, connect to ground
  • In (I) and Out (O) The input and output to/from the NeoPixel, for chaining
  • Switch Anode (A) – The ‘positive’ side of the switch+diode. If you’re using the switch with a pull-up resistor, connect this pin to your microcontroller. If you’re using a pull-down, connect this pin to your logic level power pin.
  • Switch Cathode (C) – The ‘negative’ side of the switch+diode. If you’re using the switch with a pull-up resistor, connect this pin to ground. If you’re using a pull-down, connect this pin to your microcontroller.

There’re two rows of 5-pin contacts on a 0.1″ grid on both sides. Solder in both sides for mechanical stability; the two sides share the same pins except for one side is NeoPixel in and the opposite side has the out pin. For side-by-side wiring, we also have the cathode pin broken out on the sides, and another set of NeoPixel In/Out pins.

Please note, each order comes with one assembled PCB and a small stick of break-off header. Soldering is required to attach the header for breadboard use. A mechanical switch and key cap are not included! Use any CHOC-compatible switch. Note that Cherry/MX switches are not at all compatible with CHOC sockets.

The NASA-based work of Tom Sachs uses the ambition of the space program and brings it to his art. The future that was created by the space program is no the future we live in. Tom Sachs Space Program: Indoctrination, on view at the Art Sonje Center, Seoul, attempts to look at the world of 2022 through the optimism brought by the engineering feats of the 1960s. Here’s more from JUXTAPOZ:

The show is not just about space and NASA, but about the stages of creation and, literally, in making a dream come true. The steps and analysis taken. It’s fantasy and absolutely not. That is why Sachs continues to be such a pivotal and interesting figure this far into his career. What is fantasy and what is real? What are our dreams? As the gallery notes, “Tom Sachs’ SPACE PROGRAM represents the artist’s bold spin on the desires of human beings, and adventures beyond a world that has already been colonized through our modernization and industrialization process. As a setting for showing, experiencing, and taking part in the meticulous indoctrination process that drives the space program and the associated adventure, the exhibition is a place for education and gaining a new understanding of the anthropocene and humanity’s effect on this world and other worlds.”

At first glance Pando may look like a forest, but that ‘forest’ is 80 foot high clone ‘stems’ of one tree connected through a single root system that spans 80 football fields! Lance Oditt of Friends of Pando invited Jeff Rice to record the tree. From NPR:

Rice then set out to capture that tree-wide vibration in the midst of a thunderstorm. “I was hunkered down and huddling, trying to stay out of the lightning. When those storms come through Pando, they’re pretty big. They’re pretty dramatic.”

All that wind blowing through the innumerable leaves offered Rice a sonic opportunity to record the tree.

“We found this incredible opening in one of the [stems] that I’ve dubbed the Pando portal,” he says.

Atlas Obscura recently posted about the mystery surrounding Roman dodecahedrons. Historians still aren’t quite sure how to place or understand these objects. They have been able to map which part of the Roman Empire they were more popular.

Roman dodecahedrons—more properly called Gallo-Roman dodecahedrons—are 12-sided hollow objects, each side pentagonal in shape and almost always contain a hole. The outer edges generally feature rounded protrusions.

The post compiles a long list of ideas about what these objects were used for, many of which sound probable! Read more

Researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa have found that hammerhead sharks close their gills and hold their breath to keep their body temperature up while diving into cold waters to hunt :

“This was a complete surprise!” said Mark Royer, lead author and researcher with the Shark Research Group at the Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) in the UH Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. “It was unexpected for sharks to hold their breath to hunt like a diving marine mammal. It is an extraordinary behavior from an incredible animal.”

NPR points readers to an important note:

Scalloped hammerheads may not be the only ones doing this. “This strategy could be widespread,” write Mark Meekan and Adrian Gleiss, two Australian marine scientists not affiliated with the study, in an accompanying commentary on the new research.

The work, they wrote, is another example of how new electronic tags and sensors are helping to explain “the extraordinary persistence of these animals across 400 million years of changing ocean environments.”

Adafruit ANO Rotary Navigation Encoder to I2C Stemma QT Adapter: The ANO rotary encoder wheel is a funky user interface element, reminiscent of the original clicking scroll wheel interface on the first iPods. It’s a nifty kit, but the pin-out is a little odd – and there’s a ton of pins needed to connect to the rotary encoder and 5 button switches.

This Stemma QT breakout makes all that frustration go away – solder in the ANO Directional Navigation and Scroll Wheel Rotary Encoder (not included). The onboard microcontroller is programmed with our seesaw firmware and will track all pulses and pins for you and then save the incremental value for querying at any time over I2C. Plug it in with a Stemma QT cable for instant rotary goodness, with any kind of microcontroller from an Arduino UNO up to a Raspberry Pi to one of our QT Py’s.

You haven’t seen the Titanic like this. This scan is so detailed its being dubbed a digital twin. Via Ars Technica:

The joint mission by Magellan and Atlantic Productions deployed two submersibles nicknamed Romeo and Juliet to map every millimeter of the wreck, including the debris field spanning some three miles. The result was a whopping 16 terabytes of data, along with over 715,000 still images and 4K video footage. That raw data was then processed to create the 3D digital twin. The resolution is so good, one can make out part of the serial number on one of the propellers.

Video from The Times and The Sunday Times: Wreck of Titanic visualised in first full 3D scan
