A pretty great photo series shared by the instagram account @historyphotographed. Before computer aided design the use of drafting tables, paper and supplies took a lot of space. Photos span the 50s to the 80s.

Prior to the release of AutoCAD in 1982, engineering drawings were all done by hand using different grade pencils, erasers, T-squares and set squares.

Even after all the manual labor, if a change was required, the engineers and toolmakers had to start from scratch and make the sketches all over again. Nowadays, architecture designers and other drafters are mainly just clicking their mouse and keyboard and not hunched over on a giant desk wondering if any changes will be made to their final drafts.

In this Project Farm product testing video, Todd looks at bench grinders. The brands tested are JET, Shop Fox, Rikon, Delta, SKIL, Hercules, Bauer, Performance Tool, and WEN.

Grinders were tested for the amount of time to reach full operating speed, wheel stop speed, electric motor torque, electric motor temperature after 15 minutes of intense use, electric motor watts under load, grinder weight, abrasive wheel quality, and a subjective build quality rating.

I am in the market for a cheap, light-use grinder and was hoping the $88 WEN would perform better than it did. In the end, the best of the lot was the expensive JET ($528), although the far more affordable Shop Fox ($250) did well, too.

I’ll still likely settle for the WEN as I only have light, periodic use for such a tool.

Miguel Herrada from the University of Seville and Jens Eggers from the University of Bristolmay have solved Leonardo Da Vinci’s 500-year-old bubble paradox. In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the duo explain the weird behavior of bubbles. SyFy shares how they popped the riddle (pun definitely intended).

Since da Vinci first reported the weird behavior of bubbles in water, experiments have continuously demonstrated that a bubble with a radius above about a millimeter will become unstable as it travels toward the surface. Through some as yet poorly understood process, bubbles above a millimeter in radius fall into a pattern of periodic motion five centuries worth of scientists failed to explain. The problem was that our modeling of bubble dynamics couldn’t accurately reproduce what we observe in nature.

Researchers at Stanford Medicine have shown they can measure thousands of molecules from a single drop of blood. Here’s to hoping doctor’s appointments in the coming years are less stressful.

Instead of focusing on any single protein, metabolite or inflammatory marker, the growing field of “omics” research takes a broader, systems-biology approach: analyzing the whole spectrum of proteins (the proteome), fats (the lipidome) or the by-products of metabolism (the metabolome). Although recent advances have made this data analysis more robust and efficient, the real-world usefulness of multi-omics research has been limited by the difficulties of sample collection, among other challenges. To measure someone’s response to a food or medication, many samples in a short time span may be needed; currently, sampling requires traveling to a clinic for an intravenous blood draw of 10 to 50 milliliters.

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

Evening Standard shares how London researchers developed a body sensor suit to help combat two degenerative diseases that can lead to paralysis.

Scientists combined movement data gathered from wearable tech with a new medical AI technology to identify movement patterns and predict disease progression in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Friedreich’s ataxia (FA). Both are genetic diseases that affect movement and lead to paralysis. There are no cures.

To turn it into reality they first had to find — and later design — the right “adversarial algorithms” to help them create images that would fool facial recognition software. Either they would create the image — of our giraffe, say — and then use the algorithm to adjust it. Or they set the colors, size, and form they wanted the image or pattern to take, and then had the algorithm create it.
