This is an octobass – it’s so low it will turn your insides to jelly

Did you know there’s a string instrument lower than the double bass? Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume invented the octobass circa 1850 and although the instrument is still played today, it’s very rare. Currently, the only active symphony that owns one is the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Classic fm posted about the octobass back in 2016, including details on how to play it and how low it actually goes.

The octobass owned by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra is apparently the lowest working one, with a range reportedly extending more than an octave below that of the double bass. For the technically minded it is tuned to A0, compared to the C1 that a double bass can stretch to. Here is the octobass’s lowest note compared to the double bass.
