NASA dropped this promo video for the Artemis program. Its a fun trip around the moon that should get you hyped for what a modern day moon exploration can be.

Cameras on NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft give us amazing views of our adventure around the Moon. See up close views of the Moon from external cameras as well as the view from inside the capsule.

Orion launched on the SLS rocket from Launch Pad 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022. Artemis I is an uncrewed flight test of our SLS rocket, Orion spacecraft, and exploration ground systems for future Artemis missions—which will provide the foundation to send humans to the lunar surface, develop a long-term presence on and around the Moon, and pave the way for humanity to set foot on Mars.

This project shows you how to convert ultrasonic frequencies into a range perceptible to the human ear.4Eyes6Senses shares this awesome project on instructables.

Continuing my interest in wearable augmentations that visualize phenomena, I designed a “third ear” that enables you to listen and/or visualize ultrasonic frequencies. For perspective, the normal frequency range for humans is around 20Hz to 20kHz. We start with a max hearing of 20kHz as babies and as adults our hearing declines to around 17kHz. With this third ear, you can detect frequencies between 20kHz to 100kHz, enabling brand-new sensing of your environment. You can hear the frequencies in real-time with a pair of wired headphones, or you can visualize the phenomena with a p5.js script. The device can also enable new perspective-taking, as you can hear frequencies similar to your dog (40kHz), your cat (64kHz), or a bat (100kHz).

Years ago, Adam Savage acquired the Weta Workshop Gandalf staff and pipe. But the pipe wasn’t real, it was a solid resin cast. So, he made his own, not to smoke from it, just to create as accurate an experience as possible.

Who doesn’t love a map project? The Ely Folk School and the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa are working together to add the orignal Ojibwe names to towns and waterways. Surprising that this map doesn’t already exist!

From MPR:

“This project underscores our voice and our history in the region,” said Bois Forte Tribal Chair Cathy Chavers. “This map will serve as a tribute to all who came before us and to the future generations as well.”

It features 106 names of places around the Bois Forte homeland, from Lake Vermillion to Nett Lake.

Schurke describes them as “very lyrical, descriptive, poetic names.” They include lakes and rivers, historic trading sites and village locations.

Check out the full article, its full of great history and details on the project.

Pulling inpiration from isolation and global events, Correlation Waves envelopes the viewer. It creates a unique experience that is almost like a drop down wearable.

From Action.io:

Correlation Waves is a physical interactive installation composed of a kinetic sculpture suspended from the ceiling. The sculpture reacts to the position of the audience by inflating itself and deploying an isolation chamber around the person standing right under it. Users who interact with the piece will be trapped for a brief period of time where they will experience an audiovisual narrative journey distorted by the very nature of the isolation.

UPDATED GUIDE: Adafruit GFX Graphics Library for Arduino

Specifically, a new page, “Minimizing Redraw Flicker,” has been added to get cleaner updates on many GFX-compatible displays. For example, when showing live updates from a sensor, rather than clearing the whole screen and printing new numbers, there are ways to have new values overwrite the old ones in-place. This gives projects a more polished appearance with just a little extra effort. Nothing actually new in the library, these techniques just haven’t been well documented before.

Drones are being added to the curriculum around the country. This new pilot school is letting students at Corliss Early College STEM High School in Chicago’s south side learn to fly drones. In the expanding world of drone flight these skills may lead to new heights.

Via the Chicago Tribune:

The entire program started with one student’s curiosity, said Phylydia Hudson, Corliss’ STEM program manager.

Hudson said that many opportunities available to youth on the North Side are outside the reach of students on the Far South Side. Now, after the success of the program, she hopes the school can become a hub for drone piloting and aviation.

“We see this as an emerging technology, and we are actually training them for things for jobs that don’t even exist yet,” she said. “And it all happened because of a student saying, ‘Hey, can we have this?’”

Who doesn’t love a chonky space mystery? Planet HD 114082 b is the size of Jupiter (a gas giant) and denser than Earth (an iron cored rock). These dimensions and its relatively young age defy some of the current planet formation models.

Via Digital Trends:

The planet, called HD 114082 b, is similar in size to Jupiter, but seems to have eight times its mass. It’s common for astronomers to discover gas giants similar to or larger than Jupiter, but it’s very unusual to discover a planet this dense and heavy. “Compared to currently accepted models, HD 114082 b is about two to three times too dense for a young gas giant with only 15 million years of age,” said lead author Olga Zakhozhay in a statement.

DOOM was ported to the PSX by Williams Entertainment with some assistance from id Software. It took a little bit less than a year for a team of five to port the engine, change the assets, and make everything work with “only” 3.5 MiB of RAM.

The graphics were reduced: the textures chopped down in size, the sprites, monsters, and weapons reduced in size. […] Sometimes animations had frames cut. – Harry Teasley

The result shipped on November 16, 1995. It is universally considered the best console port with some aspects even outmatching the PC version thanks to colored vertex and CD quality music.

The original source code of of DOOM on PSX has never been released but it turned out to not be a problem at all. There is plenty of information out there.

The first source is the amazing PSY-Q SDK which was the “official” tool used by PSX developers at the time. There is a lot of documentation in the many PDFs provided. The library (e.g: libcd, libds) developed by SCE are also well detailed. It is refreshing to find clear explanations when compared to the next to nothing provided on other consoles like SNES.

Another source of information was the many external tools available nowadays. ISOBuster allowed to open the CD content. PSound was able to scan LCD archives. The awesome no$PSX emulator’s ability to trace GPU and SPU commands were pure gold.

Finally and perhaps most impressively, DOOM on PSX has received a lot of love from the fan community. It has been fully reverse engineered. PSXDOOM-RE particularly stands out since it is a C codebase which can be compiled with PSY-Q SDK into a fully playable PSX game. The code hosted is highly reliable since the methodology used to produce it involved taking machine code and rewrite each functions in C.

Donghua is often mistaken for anime. The two are not the same and the animation does look very different if you pay attention. Regardless, the stories, animation, and history are unique and very worth your time.Polygon shares their top 10.

Donghua — Chinese animation, sometimes mistakenly conflated with anime — covers as wide a variety of tones and subjects as any other type of animated story, from sunny necromancers to particularly rebellious children with dragon friends. Donghua titles have been showing up on Crunchyroll and Netflix more and more lately, and some of them, like the fantasy of gods and demons in Heaven’s Official Blessing, follow familiar emotional roller coaster beats. Others have their own tear-jerking, laugh-inducing forms of impact. Many donghua movies and TV series retell household Chinese tales, and all of them reach out and question the audience’s relationship with the contemporary world. The characters are fun, sassy, or determined, like heroes in stories from any country, but they blend the past, present, and future of an irreplaceable culture.

Zenithal shading is all the rage in miniature painting. This is where you spray paint a light/white top-down (from the zenith) shade on the miniature after priming which adds highlights to the top of everything on the mini as you add successive layers of paint.

In nadiral shading, you do the opposite. After the mini has been basecoated, you airbrush a thin dark wash from the bottom-up to create all of the undershading/low-light areas of the model.

A lot of sci-fi shorts on channels like DUST offer curious little vignettes, slices of life from some imagined future, but they rarely feel like a complete narrative arc and few ever have what could be called a definitive ending. Not so this wonderful little short, The Mechanical. Its ending pitches a zinger.

If you look at the history of any genre, you’ll find obscure masterpieces that you never knew existed. The fans of science fiction and fantasy love new discoveries, and it can sometimes seem as if every nook and cranny has been explored. But publishers regularly surprise us. Here’s a selection of obscure gems from the early 20th century that you may not have heard of, including a precursor to afro-futurism, Of One Blood by Pauline Hopkins. Here’s more from MIT Press:

Long before Marvel Comics gave us Wakanda, a high-tech African country that has never been colonized, this 1903 novel gave readers Reuel Briggs—a mixed-race Harvard medical student, passing as white, who stumbles upon Telassar. In this long-hidden Ethiopian city, whose wise, peaceful inhabitants possess both advanced technologies and mystical powers, Reuel discovers the incredible secret of his own birth. Now, he must decide whether to return to the life he’s built, and the woman he loves, back in America—or play a role in helping Telassar take its rightful place on the world stage. Considered one of the earliest articulations of Black internationalism, Of One Blood takes as its theme the notion that race is a social construct perpetuated by racists.

Of One Blood returns in this new edition, celebrating a seminal work of Black speculative fiction. Over a century since its original publication, Hopkins’s classic remains as relevant today as ever.” —P. Djèlí Clark, author of Ring Shout
