the return of the zombie bluefruit ez-link!

many many years ago we developed and sold a pair of products called ez-key (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1535) and ez-link (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1588) that implemented bluetooth classic HID and SPP respectively. they were popular because we actually did the two ‘right’ – with SPP having control lines for remote programming of boards that would normally use the RTS/DTR/CTS lines for auto-reset control.

to do the initial development we had to source CSR chipset BT modules, get them FCC certified and then develop for them using the very-unpleasant-and-totally-nda’d CSR firmware package and IDE. and then our module supplier closed shop and everything got extremely annoying to replace and recertify and we ended up discontinuing the line.

This delightful video from Architectural Digest lives at the fanciful intersection of architectural design and animated castles from Disney movies. I’m partial to Castle DunBroch from the movie Brave. As historian Meredith Cohen points out in the video, the depiction of the castle contains many inconsistencies (castles weren’t made from stone until the 11th century, while the movie is set in the 10th century, the castle is in active ruin, which generally wasn’t the case while castles were actually being lived in) and so on. Still, I love how the open-air, flawed, shadowy structure lends itself to the movie’s themes. Which Disney castle is your favorite?

Just when you thought you had some idea about what Star Trek: Deep Space 9 was all about, and you were trying to figure out how you felt about a show about intrigue at a space station that’s also an embassy that’s also a casino, and were kinda worried about just where the Star Trek was in Star Trek: Deep Space 9, the wormhole unfurls. The now-stable wormhole transforms the space station into an intergalactic Casablanca. That is what a wormhole can do to a story: open it up to the universe. Here’s more from The Science Museum:

“Like everything in science fiction, wormholes vary across the genre from rigorously explored phenomenon whose scientific implications are the centerpiece of the story, to simple plot devices,” comments Glyn Morgan, Science Museum curator. “In our forthcoming immersive Science Fiction exhibition, for example, we make use of portals which harness wormholes as a way of transporting visitors to new locations”.

The science of wormholes dates back to 1916, when Ludwig Flamm at the University of Vienna realised that the equations behind a black hole have an equal but opposite solution, a ‘white hole’, which cannot be entered from the outside, although things can escape from them.

Space is like history. What we see of space, what space means means, and who gets to tell the story of space story changes with every new era. Sometimes the end of an era is invisible and we only notice it later, when academics figure out how to write nonfiction books with fun covers about the transition. But some are obvious, and one of the most obvious transitions was the spectacle of the space shuttle Endeavor cruising its way into history along the streets of Los Angeles. Here’s more from The Atlantic:

The space shuttle Endeavour is on its last mission today, a 12-mile creep through Los Angeles city streets on a 160-wheeled carrier. It is passing through neighborhoods and strip malls, headed toward its final destination, the California Science Center in South Los Angeles. At times, the shuttle has barely cleared trees, houses and and street signs along a course heavily prepared for the trip. The move will cost an estimated $10 million, according to the Exposition Park museum. Gathered here are a few images of Endeavour’s last journey.

Here’s an amazing concept. A natural telescope, made from the Sun’s gravitational field, that could be used to peer closely at exoplanet in search for signs of extraterrestrial life. And we’re talking close observation, to the tune of tens of miles across.

The concept is called Solar Gravitational Lens (SGL) and what seemed like sheer science fiction when scientists began talking about it is now looking ever more feasible.

Researchers led by Henry Helvajian, senior scientist in the Physical Sciences Laboratories at the nonprofit research center The Aerospace Corporation, have now shared the initial results of this ongoing NIAC study on the preprint server arxiv, which have not been peer-reviewed. Though the team cautioned that the mission would need to overcome several technical challenges, it could ultimately answer one of humanity’s most fundamental questions: Are we alone in the universe?

“The SGL offers capabilities that are unmatched by any planned or conceivable optical instrument,” according to the study, which was co-authored by Slava Turyshev, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and principal investigator of the NIAC mission concept. “With its unique optical properties, the SGL can be used to obtain detailed, high resolution images of Earth-like exoplanets as far as 100 light years from Earth, with measurement durations lasting months, or at most a few years.”

New guide! IoT Food Scale with Azure and CircuitPython.

There are many IoT platforms out there, including Adafruit’s own Adafruit.IO, but if you want to build really big projects or run a business using IoT, you’ll need to use a platform that provides support for projects that scale. Microsoft Azure has resources for these types of applications and the best news is that you can use it with CircuitPython.

You can build a food scale using CircuitPython, a NAU7802 STEMMA board and a strain gauge and in this guide, you’ll take that project and connect it to Microsoft Azure to log the weight measurements over time. Additionally, you’ll setup a text alert when it looks like you need to refill the food container.

Tracking inventory usage over time is a great way to utilize IoT tools. It can help you see patterns and better plan for the future.

Check out the guide here!

Intel Foundry Services | Synopsys Partnership

Intel isn’t just fabbing for themselves. Announced today, they will be partnering with MediaTek utilizing Intel Foundry Services, which expands on an Intel initiative started in 2021.

MediaTek plans to use Intel process technologies to manufacture multiple chips for a range of smart edge devices. IFS offers a broad manufacturing platform with technologies optimized for high performance, low power and always-on connectivity built on a roadmap that spans production-proven three-dimensional FinFET transistors to next-generation breakthroughs.

As TSMC continues to hold the majority of semiconductor production, Intel is looking to compete. The more partners they can fab for, the more the can invest in foundries. Intel is trying to take advantage of U.S. initiatives for domestic fab production and this type of business will help.

Some for info about IFS is below, but read the whole announcement on Business Wire.

IFS was established in 2021 to help meet the surging global demand for advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity. IFS is differentiated from other foundry offerings with a combination of leading-edge process and packaging technology, a world-class IP portfolio, and committed capacity in the United States and Europe. IFS customers will reap the benefits of Intel’s recently announced factory expansions at existing sites, as well as plans for major new investments in greenfield sites in Ohio and Germany.

I’ve long been a huge fan of 1-2-3 blocks and always have them around when doing a host of different projects. These blocks were originally made for use in machining, but have now spread into the worlds of woodworking, prototyping, modeling, and all sorts of other maker disciplines.

As the name implies, a 1-2-3 block is a precision-machined, hardened steel block in a 1-2-3 ratio. An Imperial block is a realiable 1″ x 2″ x 3″. There are also metric blocks in the 1-2-3 configuration, and blocks in other sizes, such as 2-4-6.

These blocks are ever-so-handy for quick measuring, aligning, holding parts for gluing/fastening, as shop weights, and countless other applications.

One of the features that few people outside of machining use are the holes drilled into the blocks. These are not just there to keep the overall weight down. They are threaded and non-threaded holes designed for attaching the blocks in various configurations (such as for making right-angle or T- jigs).

In this Stumpy Nubs video, James introduces a clever little hardware kit for easily attaching blocks — and attaching them with nothing proud of the blocks. As he points out, you can source these screws and through-hole fasteners yourself, but why not support the guy who came up with the idea for this kit?

That guy, Mike Taylor, sells a kit of 6 hex-head screws, sized for 1″, 2″, and 3″ attachment, 4 threaded through-hole dowels, a hex key, and a slotted driver head — all housed in a handy little plastic case.

I’m sold. I just bought a kit (only $10). Mike makes really high-quality blocks at a very affordable prize ($20/pair), too, so while I was at it, I snagged another pair of those. It always feels good to support a maker small business.

Folks have their favorite robots, of course. Some lean toward R2-D2, some really dig the T-1000, some like cuddly little WALL-E, and some grey-haired obscurantists will talk your ear off about V.I.N.CENT. from The Black Hole. But a everyone, we hope, has a soft spot in their heart for Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet, the classic CinemaScope science fiction riff on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. But only the pop surrealism master Eric Joyner would think of painting Robby playing the blues on an electric guitar. Here’s more from Sci-Fi-O-Rama:

First I get a kernel of an idea, then think about it, expand upon it… consider all the possibilities. I may do some sketches, depending on how lost I am. Then I do research on the subject I want to paint. Next, I may photograph some of my toy robots. Then on the computer I will combine the sketches, research and photos into a composition. Then after transferring the image to the canvas, I spray it with fixative. Next is a thin wash of oil paint (1/2 thinner, 1/2 Galkyd); a brown or grey color. After that drys I work from dark to light, background to foreground, thin to thick and fuzzy to sharp. I mix regular oil paints with alkyds, so the paint drys faster. After a couple weeks I can varnish it, usually spray varnish.

Recently, I got an email from one of the readers of my weekly tips newsletter. He was looking for a series of videos about prototyping for engineers that he thought I’d written about at some point. I hadn’t, but I told him I would post his message in the newsletter to see if it rang any bells with others.

Within minutes after sending this week’s newsletter, I got this email from a reader named Talon Chandler:

I suspect he might be referring to Dan Gelbart’s series of videos. Dan is a local legend among engineers in Vancouver, BC. He founded Creo, a printing technology company that sold to Kodak circa 2005, and several other companies including Kardium, a growing healthcare company. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Dan once (I interned at Kardium close to 10 years ago), although I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting his extraordinary shop.

The videos he points to are quite the find, an 18-part series on machining prototypes. Dan’s other videos are worth your time, too.

On this Element14 video, they look at eight basic and useful op-amp circuits you can use as springboards for your own projects.

The amp circuits covered are non-inverting amplifier, inverting amplifier, comparator, peak detector, summing amp, differential amp, a clipper and a clamper circuit.

Here is a previous video they did explaining op-amps work:

In May NREL set a new benchmark for solar panel efficiency. Solar power is one of the most readily available renewable resources out there, if you can harness it. These new cells aren’t just impressive for their efficiency but how little light intensity was required.

Details of the development are outlined in the paper “Triple-junction solar cells with 39.5% terrestrial and 34.2% space efficiency enabled by thick quantum well superlattices,” which appears in the May issue of the journal Joule.

The results come from Inverted Metamorphic Multi-junciton cells. Great recap of current solar panel tech from Undecided with Matt Ferrell:

Scientists have just had a major solar panels efficiency breakthrough, and it could mean a big change for the future of renewable energy.

I have long been a huge fan of the Mr. Hobby Polisher Pro sanding tool. This is a simple (and a bit overpriced) battery-operated disc polisher/sander sold to the hobby market for sanding off sprue material and finishing models. It’s basically an electric toothbrush with a disc head.

The Polisher Pro comes with 3 sheets of sanding pads in 600, 800, and 1000-grit. There are 45 pads in all. I’ve had my tool for several years now, use it often in modeling, and still have plenty of pads left. There are also replacement sanding pads available on Amazon (and there are pads available in other grits).

This video introduces a use I hadn’t thought of: for sanding layer lines and joins in resin and FDM 3D prints. The video doesn’t have a lot of content beyond that basic idea, but I was happy to discover another use for a tool I already own.

I know many will think: Just use a Dremel tool. You can if you have a mini Dremel, but for modeling, this tool is better sized and not as aggressive as a Dremel. And, don’t be like this guy. Always wear a mask when sanding resin and plastic.
