I have been watching the career of Miles ever since I covered him for Make: in 2017. Then 13 years old, Miles showed real confidence and character on his Make with Miles YouTube channel.

So, I was tickled to see that Make: is now posting Miles’ “Maker Mondays with Miles” series on their YouTube channel. The series has Miles asking makers three question. This week’s guest is Laura Kampf.

She tried experimenting with food coloring and oil in water. Didn’t work. She tried glitter and air. Same. She tried and tried and got more frustrated with each failed effort.

Our pals at The Maker Music Festival have announced a “Young Music Maker Competition.” We’re excited to see what young maker-musicians will do in answering this challenge.

***

Calling all Young Music Makers!

This year we are launching a competition for young makers, aged 12 to 16 years, to share and be recognized for their music related projects.

Ideally, projects should be focused on building interesting or unusual musical instruments. The theme of this year’s competition is “Circuit Bending.” We have selected circuit bending because it is a great way for young makers to get interested in music and electronics by experimenting with inexpensive, thrift store electronics (toys, drum machines, keyboards, etc.) that use battery powered (low-voltage) devices to create new instruments and sounds.

“Creating music from the craziest things is another level of excitement,” said Argentine artist and musician, Laureano Cantarutti, “and this competition will enable young music makers to experiment with electronics to make unique instruments and sounds.”

All completed projects will be published on the Maker Music Festival site, and will be included in the GHAZALA Building, named after Reed Ghazala, the recognized “father” of circuit bending.

Makers can be individuals or teams but must be youth led (ages 12-16 years old).

Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of expert Music Makers, and the judging criteria will be based on:

– Technical excellence
– Visual appeal
– Musicality
– Quality of submitted video
– Fun factor

Prizes (cash and merchandise) will be awarded to the top three winners. Thanks to @adafruit and other partners for their participation and contributions.

Timeline:

– Submit completed project to Maker Music Festival: April 4th, 2022
– Projects judged: April 25th, 2022
– Winners announced: May 2nd, 2022
– Maker Music Festival 2022 live: May 14th & 15th, 2022

To submit a project:

Visit www.makermusicfestival.com and REGISTER. Follow the instructions and be sure to mention that you want to be part of the competition in the ‘COMMENT’ field.

Information for attending the event will be available the first of May.

The Adafruit VL53L4CD Time of Flight Sensor is another great Time of Flight distance sensor from ST in the VL5 series of chips, this one is great for shorter distances. The sensor contains a very tiny invisible laser source and a matching sensor. The VL53L4CD can detect the “time of flight”, or how long the light has taken to bounce back to the sensor. Since it uses a very narrow light source, it is good for determining distance of only the surface directly in front of it. Unlike sonars that bounce ultrasonic waves, the ‘cone’ of sensing is very narrow. Unlike IR distance sensors that try to measure the amount of light bounced, the VL53 is much more precise and doesn’t have linearity problems or ‘double imaging’ where you can’t tell if an object is very far or very close.

A month or so ago, in my online travels, I ran into an offer to get a “free, full-color” Estes rocketry catalog. I was shocked and delighted to learn that a proper paper catalog still exists.

I had lived for the Estes catalog when I was a pre-teen and teen. Getting one in the mail was like Christmas morning. So, I signed up for my 2022 catalog and immediately forgot about it.

A few days ago, I opened up our mailbox and there it was, and along with it came the same monster buzz of excitement and possibility that I used to get as a kid.

The 2022 catalog is quite substantial, at over 100 pages. And it is glossy, beautifully designed, and clearly laid out.

Opening it, I was tickled to immediately see a group shot of the Estes staff in front of their facility in Penrose, CO. I remember similar group photos, in that same location, from yesteryear. Dig that groovy space age architecture!

I had to laugh out loud upon turning the page to the first product offering, the starter set, now the Astrocam. In the 1970s, the starter set was the Astron Alpha, a rather basic, homely 3-fin model that sold by itself for all of $1.50. (Below is a picture of mine which I re-discovered several years ago — hard to believe this is over 50 years old.) Besides the Alpha, the 70s starter kit included a launch pad and launch controller, all for under $10. On the opposite end of the 1970s desire spectrum was the Cineroc, a rocket outfitted with a Super 8 video camera, something that felt like the bleeding edge of space age technology at the time. It sold for the princely sum of $19.95. I didn’t know anyone who had one, but all of us coveted it.

In 2022, the starter set is now the Astrocam, the modern version of the Cineroc. It comes with an HD camera with USB. It also comes with the Porta-Pad II launcher and what looks like the exact same launcher controller that I had in the 1970s. This starter set is $80. That sounds like an unapproachable sum for a kid, but it’s actually not much more over inflation.

One of the things I loved most about model rocketry was building the birds myself. So, it’s disappointing to see how many current Estes models come “ready to fly” or in kits with all snap-together plastic parts. Thankfully, they still offer full build-it-yourself kits, right down to the balsa wood fins (now pre-cut).

One thing that strikes me about the modern catalog is how similar it is in layout and content to older editions, right down to the pitch to join the National Assoc of Rocketry on the last page. I was also tickled to see some favorite rockets from my youth are still for sale, like Big Bertha, the Goblin, and the Mars Snooper.

When I was a kid, the rocket challenge we always got excited about was sending the Scrambler up and getting it back… um… unscrambled. This was a rocket with a clear payload bay below the nosecone big enough to carry a raw egg. It’s great to see that they still have an egg transport, now called Green Eggs. Why the name? The payload plastic is tinted green. If the egg breaks in fight or on landing, green eggs is what you get back. [Cue: the sad trombone music.]

When I first got into model rocketry in the late 70s, the two giants of the hobby were Vern Estes (founder of Estes Industries, along with his wife Gleda) and G. Harry Stine (often called the father of the hobby, founder of the National Association of Rocketry, and the author of The Model Rocketry Handbook). One of Stine’s early conceptual, never-built designs was a rocket called the Antar. Every rocket nerd, young and old, probably dreamed of building this sci-fi-looking ship. I did. So, I was thrilled when Estes announced the release of an Antar kit last year. I’ve been out of the hobby for many decades, but I must admit that I’m itching to build one of these.

It was a big deal in the 70s when Estes released their biggest rocket engine yet, the D-class (at up to 20 N-seconds of total impulse). The dramatic lift-offs and power of these engines was a real boost to the hobby. Today, Estes offers an even more powerful engine, the F (at up to nearly 34 N-sec impulse). Where a D engine could handle a lift weight of up to 14 oz, an E can handle up to 21 oz.

As a teen, I could never afford the Designer’s Special, a large bundle of parts for you to design your own rockets, but it was a huge source of inspiration anyway. I would try to design my own rockets on paper, constraining myself to the parts found in this bundle. Given that so many of the rockets are now ready-to-fly or snap-together, I’m happy to see that the Designer Special lives on.

One of the many cool things about Estes from the get-go was its focus on science and technology education. The current catalog is a little lighter on this content, but there’s still enough technical information for budding scientists and engineers to sink their teeth into. I’m sure over the years, Estes has endeavored to get the balance right between commercial appeal/object value and sci-tech education and deeper making.

Given all of the distractions of our age and the constant competition for kids’ attention, it’s great to see a company like Estes remaining true to its original mission of inspiring the imaginations of the young (and not-so-young) and teaching science and engineering through a fun and engaging hobby. Or, as Estes puts it: “…from backyards and school yards to worlds beyond.”

Ad astra per aspera!

You can order your own Estes print catalog here.

NEW PRODUCT – Adafruit VL53L4CD Time of Flight Distance Sensor – ~1 to 1300mm – STEMMA QT / Qwiic

This is another ‘big sister’ of the VL6180X ToF sensor and can handle about ~1 to 1300mm of range distance: basically, it combines the short range of the VL6180X in that it can sense up to the body of the sensor, with the increased range of the VL53L0X, which can handle about 50mm to 1200mm of range distance.

The sensor is small and easy to use in any robotics or interactive project. Since it needs 2.8V power and logic we put the little fellow on a breakout board with a regulator and level shifting. You can use it with any 3-5V power or logic microcontroller with no worries. Works great with the 3.3V logic level of a Feather or Raspberry Pi, or the 5v level of a Metro 328 or Arduino Uno, this breakout is ready to work with most common microcontrollers or SBCs. and since it speaks I2C, you can easily connect it up with two data wires plus power and ground.

5396 side ORIG 2022 02

5396 kit ORIG 2022 02

As if that weren’t enough, we’ve also added SparkFun qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors for the I2C bus so you don’t even need to solder. Just wire up to your favorite micro with a plug-and-play cable to get ToF data ASAP. For a no-solder experience, just wire up to your favorite micro, like the STM32F405 Feather using a STEMMA QT adapter cable. The Stemma QT connectors also mean the VL53L4CD can be used with our various associated accessoriesQT Cable is not included, but we have a variety in the shop

Communicating to the sensor is done over I2C with an API written by ST, they have an Arduino library with an example for communication here.

In this video, YouTuber, engineer, and educator, Jeremy Fielding talks about prototyping and how essential it can be in the design process.

In the video, Jeremy also reveals a new venture he’s working on with some fellow engineers. They’re starting a research and development business where they can take some of their more successful projects to market and act as an out-of-house R&D department for other small companies that might not be able to have their own in-house team. This is something that I’m surprised more talented makers don’t do. Back in the 1990s, when I ran a hardware review website, called Street Tech, we dabbled in hiring our brain pool out to do product testing and consulting. We worked with companies from iRobot to Brenthaven (computer bag makers) to Wizards of the Coast (makers of D&D). I’ve always regretted that we didn’t take this further. Glad to see that Jeremy and company are rolling with something similar.

NEW PRODUCT – Adafruit ESP32 Feather V2 – 8MB Flash + 2 MB PSRAM – STEMMA QT

One of our star Feathers is the Adafruit HUZZAH32 ESP32 Feather – with the fabulous ESP32 WROOM module on there, it makes quick work of WiFi and Bluetooth projects that take advantage of Espressifs most popular chipset. Recently we had to redesign this feather to move from the obsolete CP2104 to the CP2012N and one thing led to another and before you know it we made a completely refreshed design: the Adafruit ESP32 Feather V2.

5400 top ORIG 2022 02

The V2 is a significant redesign, enough so we consider it a completely new product. It still features the ESP32 chip but has many upgrades and improvements:

  • Compared to the original Feather with 4 MB Flash and no PSRAM, the V2 has 8 MB Flash and 2 MB PSRAM
  • Additional user button tactile switch on input pin 38
  • Additional NeoPixel mini RGB LED with controllable power pin
  • Additional STEMMA QT port for plug and play I2C connections
  • USB Type C port instead of Micro B
  • Separate controllable 3.3V power supply for STEMMA QT to allow for ultra low power consumption even with sensors are attached
  • Designed for low power usage: verified with a PPK to draw 70uA from the Lipoly battery in deep sleep and 1.2mA in light sleep.
  • ESP32 Pico module is much smaller, allowing for clear marking of all breakout pads and additional mounting holes!
  • Upgrade the USB to serial converter from CP2014 (2mbps max rate) to CP2102N which can handle 3 mbps

However, in order to add the PSRAM, and use the new Pico module which was small enough to allow all the fun extras, some of the breakout pads have changed, so here’s what you need to know:

  • The pin numbers for the I2C port (SDA, SCL), hardware UART (RX, TX), and SPI (SCK, MOSI, MISO) have changed. If your code has hardcoded use for those pins, you’ll want to replace them either by the new numbers or change the code to use the ‘pretty’ names like SDA or SCK.
When selecting the new Feather ESP32 V2 board in the Espressif board support package, the correct numbers will be substituted.
Note the names are in the same spots, we haven’t changed where the I2C/UART/SPI pins are located on the board, just which ESP32 pin numbers they are connected to in the module.
  • The ‘corner’ pin next to TX has changed from pin 21 to 37. This pin is not used in any FeatherWings because it’s considered an ‘extra pin’. It’s also changed from a GPIO to input-only
  • The remaining numbered pins and A0-A5 pins have not changed pin numbers.

That module nestled in at the end of this Feather contains a dual-core ESP32 chip, 8 MB of SPI Flash, 2 MB of PSRAM, tuned PCB antenna, and all the passives you need to take advantage of this powerful new processor. The ESP32 has both WiFi and Bluetooth Classic/LE support. That means it’s perfect for just about any wireless or Internet-connected project.

Because it’s part of our Feather eco-system, you can take advantage of the 50+ Wings that we’ve designed to add all sorts of cool accessories. Plus that built in battery charging and monitoring you know and love with the ESP32 Feather is still there in this upgrade.

5400 kit ORIG 2022 02

Features:

  • ESP32 Dual-core 240MHz Xtensa® processor – the classic dual-core ESP32 you know and love!
  • Mini module has FCC/CE certification and comes with 8 MByte of Flash and 2 MByte of PSRAM – you can have huge data buffers
  • Power options – USB type C or Lipoly battery
  • Built-in battery charging when powered over USB-C
  • LiPoly battery monitor with two 200K resistor divider
  • Reset and User (I38) buttons to reset board and as a separate input
  • High-speed upload with auto-reset and serial debug with ultra-reliable CP2102N chipset.
  • STEMMA QT connector for I2C devices, with switchable power, so you can go into low power mode.
  • Charge/User LEDs + status NeoPixel with pin-controlled power for low power usage
  • Low Power friendly! In deep sleep mode we can get down to 80~100uA of current draw from the Lipoly connection. Quiescent current is from the power regulator, ESP32 chip, and Lipoly monitor. Turn off the NeoPixel and external I2C power for the lowest quiescent current draw.
  • Works with Arduino or MicroPython

Comes fully assembled and tested, with a USB interface that lets you quickly use it with the Arduino IDE or the low-level ESP32 IDF. We also toss in some header so you can solder it in and plug into a solderless breadboard. Lipoly battery and USB cable not included (but we do have lots of options in the shop if you’d like!)

Here’s an area of terrain-making that I’ve never thought of: underwater ruins. But why not? There are a lot of cool fish people miniatures available these days and lots of RPG rule sets that are flexible enough to accommodate underwater adventuring.

In this Black Magic Craft, Jeremy creates a ruined underwater building scene. As someone who has used aquarium plants to create alien flora, it’s fun to see them being used in an actual undersea build. And cutting the foam-based ruins on an angle so that they look like they’re sinking into the sand is inspired.
