Putting Together a Japanese Time Frame House

In my weekly tips newsletter, I keep track of emerging maker trends. One trend I’ve been seeing lately is YouTube makers tacking “ASMR” onto videos that are non-narrated, procedural, and relatively quiet.

Such is the case with this latest Mr. Chickadee video. If you’re not familiar, Mr. Chickadee is a homesteader in rural Kentucky who uses nothing but antique, non-powered hand tools.

He’s recently built a gorgeous Hobbit-styled stone root cellar and has been preparing the foundation and the wood for a Japanese-style timber-frame addition to his house.

In this mesmerizing video, he assembles the entire building’s frame using only his own muscle and a big mallet. Satisfying to watch.
