If Kelly Reichardt was right when, for her beloved 2006 movie “Old Joy,” she wrote the line “Sorrow is nothing but worn out joy,” then we can confidently say that, by the transitive property, nostalgia is both sorrow and worn out joy. That means the commodified nostalgia of our current entertainment world is worn out joy sold for a buck. So how do we healthily express our very real love for these pieces of commodified nostalgia? We make them our own. That’s what the students at Tanabe Technical High School in Wakayama, Japan have done with a certain DeLorean. Here’s more from Kotaku:
The monument is located in front of the school, and four times a day during the week, it slowly spins around as the Back to the Future theme song plays, with the okay given from Hollywood.
Work on the project began in 2016 on the 500 kg replica, Sankei reports, and over the years, around 500 students have worked on the project.
