Laura Kampf Re-Thinks Her Screw Storage System

One of the things I love about working in a shop is getting to know your systems over time, identifying their shortcomings, and creating new solutions that address them.

In this Laura Kampf video, she re-examines the screw and fastener storage system she’s had for ten years (basically, shelves of color-coded tobacco boxes with a sample of the hardware on the front and size information). This system requires her to get the box of screws or bolts along with the corresponding washers and nuts to carry over to the workbench. And then, if she got the wrong size, but to the shelves.

To solve this problem she decided to trade up to plastic storage cases with removable bins (my favorite storage solution, too). Each bin can hold all of the hardware of a given size. In this video, she details all of this and shows how she made the racks to store the cases.

In the video, Laura also drops some science on shop organization: It’s actually far more frustrating to know you have something, but can’t find it than it is to not have it. I hear that!
