Note: the jig is deliberately designed to cut too short – you need to calibrate it. See below.

If the 80s left us anything of use, it is, for some, memories of the 8-bit sounds while playing Nintendo. And if the oughts left us anything of use it is the resurgence 8-bit sounds in the form of chiptune. And if today on this blog we have left you with anything of use, it’s this post about a custom dual-necked chiptune keytar. Here’s more, via Synthopia and ThereminHero
Greig Stewartt (Theremin Hero) shared this video demo of a custom dual-necked chiptune keytar, The Blade.
The Blade uses two Game Boys, running custom ROMs, to become a fully playable instrument.
The shell is 3D-printed and the necks were repurposed from old guitar hero controllers. All buttons are re-mappable in code. The Blade can function as a pure MIDI controller, as well as routing the MIDI direct to the Game Boy chips.
We got our Allegro A4988 stepper driver breakout PCBs back and are ready to test them. First, we verified that STEP and DIR worked (yes!) and that the LEDs lit (yes, but we need to tweak the resistors to make the brightness even). Then we tried all of the stepper-settings, you can select 1, 4, 8, or 16-microsteps. All the sleep/reset/enable pins work. Finally, we checked the current limiting functionality with a potentiometer that can be twisted to select up to 2A current per coil. This directly affects the torque, so it’s easy to test by verifying that we can stall the motor with hands or vise-grips. We’ll order these with 2oz copper and get them into production next! – video.

Make Magazine Issue 91 features a video game wedding invite made with Adafruit badge boards.
We got engaged and wanted to create a unique and memorable wedding invitation for our friends and family. Inspired by the ingenious DEF CON badges, known for their custom and interactive designs, we dreamt of creating something equally unique and complex.
In the end, we chose the Adafruit EdgeBadge (Adafruit 4400) and PyBadge LC (3939) for their impressive features and relative affordability. These credit card-sized boards include a 1.8″ 160×128 color TFT display, eight game/control buttons, a triple-axis accelerometer, light sensor, mini-speaker, and mono Class-D speaker driver.

When working with a solderless breadboards you often have switches, rotary encoders, potentiometers, LCDs, LEDs, etc. along with the other parts. This can get a bit messy and connections can get accidentally disconnected. To eliminate those problems, and make the project look much better, I created these project stands. The not only provide a means for mounting your displays, indicator, and controls, It also holds the solderless breadboard – all in one package so you can move it around easily.

Using an ESP32, Unihiker, and Flask server, this device communicates with my smart home system through MQTT and OpenAI’s API. It’s even voice-activated! Pretty much all the usual methods for producing sounds mechanically are covered, namely air resonating within a shaped enclosure (flutes, and such), string vibrations which might be sensed electrically (guitars, zithers, etc) and percussive instruments which vibrate an enclosed air mass (like the udu) or vibrate other things (like plates or bars). Looking over the YouTube channel, we can’t think of much they haven’t tried to make music with!

Floating crystals and glowing lights are a match made in heaven. This project combines a wide variety of skills and tools into one lovely project. Make a gorgeous hanging lamp with sparkly beads, glowing crystals, live edge wood and of course, lots of NeoPixels.
Since you, dear reader, have your very own unique style, this tutorial will focus on giving you the tools to design and create your own one-of-a-kind bespoke hanging lamp. This tutorial will provide source files and ideas, and give guidance on how the electronics fit together.
This tutorial will also get you started with customizing your own software animations. The sample code uses CircuitPython and the delightfully easy to use LED Animations Library by Kattni Rembor. This code gives you a framework that allows speed and brightness control using a rotary encoder knob, so you can adjust the lighting to suit any environment or mood.
University of Houston‘s associate professor of mechanical engineering, Jae-Hyun Ryou with assistance from post-doctoral researcher, Nam-In Kim, has led to the creation of a non-invasive wearable capable of easy and continuous measurements and monitoring of eyeball movements. The sensors use a special material that generates electricity when it bends and functions when combined with a hand-held display and computing device.
A University of Houston engineering team has developed wearable sensors to examine eye movement to assess brain disorders or damage to the brain. Many brain diseases and problems show up as eye symptoms, often before other symptoms appear.
You see, eyes are not merely a window into the soul, as poets would have it. These incredibly precious organs are also an extension of the brain and can provide early warning signs of brain-related disorders and information on what causes them. Examining the eyes can also help track the progression and symptoms of physical and mental shocks to the brain.

Researchers at Northwestern University were able to witness and record the formation of new water bubbles. The research is a result of experiments with palladium.
Using the new technology, Dravid, Liu and Koo examined the palladium reaction. First, they saw the hydrogen atoms enter the palladium, expanding its square lattice. But when they saw tiny water bubbles form at the palladium surface, the researchers couldn’t believe their eyes.
