The invasive Spotted Lanternfly showed up in the US in 2014. I remember a few years ago, when they first made their way to NYC, there was a city-wide push to squash the bugs on sight. It didn’t work.
This team at Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute created the TartanPest. The mobile robot is powered with sensors, machine learning, and a scraping robotic arm. Set loose on a farm or yard TartanPest will seek and destroy Lanternfly egg sacks.
The TartanPest team is part of the Farm-ng “Farm Robotics Challenge”.
