Eric of Hand Tool Rescue has been doing a series on his channel where he tries to make/re-make interesting-looking tools he finds in old patent filings.
In this episode, he remakes a sort of 19th century multitool, a chisel that also had a hand plane built into it.
Besides the video being fascinating, Eric includes one of my favorite tips (at 17:41). It’s an old machinist’s trick for finding the center of a piece of round stock by leveling a ruler or flat stock on the vised round stock using a drill press and a bit in the chuck. When the ruler is eyeballed as level, you’re close enough to the center point for many situations that don’t require high-precision. (See below)
