Thanksgiving, 400 Year Anniversary, and the Wampanoags #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #NAHM #AmericanIndianandAlaskaNativeHeritageMonth

The first reported Thanksgiving was 400 years ago in 1621. For decades a one sided naritive of this holiday was represented. The reality was a lot more nuanced and unpleasant. The Wampanoags, whose culture existed for thousands of years before any pilgrims arrived, have a different relationship to this holiday.

From The Washington Post:

For the Wampanoags and many other American Indians, the fourth Thursday in November is considered a day of mourning, not a day of celebration.

Because while the Wampanoags did help the Pilgrims survive, their support was followed by years of a slow, unfolding genocide of their people and the taking of their land.

From the Washington Post: This tribe helped the Pilgrims survive for their first Thanksgiving. They still regret it 400 years later
