New York is such an imposing, intense city that it’s easy to accept its existence and design as some kind of predestined inevitability. But if you zoom out and rewind a couple of hundred years, you’ll see that New York’s urban design had many fits and starts before settling on the grid plan. And, of course, much of how it all fell into place had to do with forces of politics, money, and power. Cool video from Vox.
