Dr. Lili Cai is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign researching applied phyrics, chemistry, energy, environment, manufaturing, solid mechanics and materials, thermo and heat transfer and transportation.
MIT Technology Review included Dr. Cai and her work on heating and cooling nanomaterial-based textiles in their 2020 Innovators Under 35:
Cai’s work takes advantage of the fact that human skin strongly emits infrared radiation in a specific range of wavelengths. By manipulating the ways in which her fabrics block or transmit radiation in this band, she has produced multiple textiles that can have different effects on temperature.
