As many organizations prepare for Giving Tuesday, Calculated Genius Inc. the Chicago-based STEM nonprofit founded by President and Founder of KDM Engineering Kimberly Moore, has planned a Giving Tuesday Season Fundraiser that will extend from Tuesday, November 24 through Tuesday, December 8. The longer timeframe provides more opportunities for donors to support Calculated Genius’ work with underrepresented youth in engineering.
“KDM has been a proud financial supporter of Calculated Genius since the organization’s inception, and we are excited to help promote their Giving Tuesday Season Fundraiser,” said Kimberly Moore, President and Founder of KDM Engineering. “Typically, KDM and Calculated Genius partner in hosting an annual fundraising gala for the holidays, but due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, we have had to get creative and find other ways to raise money.”

SyFy goes behind the science of Rapunzel’s hair and if it’s possible in real life.
There’s not a clear answer on why our head hair grows so long while the same isn’t seen in other animals. It could be there’s some evolutionary advantage putting pressure on longer hair. Or it may be an artifact. Evolution, after all, doesn’t necessarily care about the objective best, so much as it cares about the good enough.
What we do know is the same processes are present in humans as in other mammals. Each follicle goes through those same three stages. It just so happens that the fur on your head has a longer anagen phase than your non-human counterparts.

One night, inexplicably, thousands of sooty shearwater birds lost their minds, dive-bombing into homes and even biting people. But, for 50 years, no one knew why… That is, until Dr. Sibel Bargu Ates connected dots throughout history through meticulous (and rather imaginative) archive specimen research. This is a Hitchcockian mystery wrapped in a scientific paper—a biological whodunnit.

LIKE, THIS REALLY HAPPENED. Alfred Hitchcock’s classic THE BIRDS is, in part, inspired by a very real phenomenon that occurred in Santa Cruz, California in 1961. One night, inexplicably, thousands of sooty shearwater birds lost their minds, dive-bombing into homes and even biting people. But, for 50 years, no one knew why… That is, until Dr. Sibel Bargu Ates connected dots throughout history through meticulous (and rather imaginative) archive specimen research. This is a Hitchcockian mystery wrapped in a scientific paper—a biological whodunnit.
The Coral accelerator chip is an all-in-one pick-n-placeable edge TPU that is designed to speed up inferences on TensorFlow. It has PCIe and USB interfaces and is just so cute! We made a simple breakout for this chip, to just test out power supply needs and wiring. We hand-stencil with an IEEE membership card and a tube of paste. Then we’ll hit it up with our hot air station! Hopefully it’ll just ‘come up’ when we wire it up to a USB port and 3.3V supply – video.

They look a lot like neon or incandescent tubing or maybe really-nice EL wire, but without the need for expensive transformers, glass tubing, or inert gasses. Unlike pixel-dot strips these lights have a continuous, pure light source, and unlike our ‘Neon’ tubing, they’re much thinner and more flexible. In the last few years, YouTube maker, Jimmy DiResta, has been creating an increasing number of products to sell. His ice pick has become both a useful everyday tool (I use mine nearly every day) and a sort of must-have maker status symbol.
Recently, he has started making and selling blades, like a cutter in the shape of a giant utility knife blade. And his most recent tool offer, the Skeleton Knife. The idea was to create a big, very sharp knife that comes without a handle. It is designed so that you can use the tang as the handle or you can create your own handle to finish the knife.
I love when makers create products like this that the recipient has to finish. And that’s exactly what makers are doing with the Skeleton Knife. Here are some of the videos of well-known makers creating their own Skeleton Knife handles.

micro:bit or CLUE Connector – Sunken Right Angle Type: If you want to do more with the BBC micro:bit, getting those pins from the card-edge connector is going to be your first hurdle. Unlike many dev-boards, the micro:bit isn’t breadboard-friendly. That makes the ‘bit durable and easy to manufacture but means you need a special connector.
This surface-mount edge connector is very slim and fully SMT, so it’s a breeze to automate. It also only has contacts on one side, just like the ‘bit, so you save money by only paying for the contacts you’re going to use.
Keyboard FeatherWing – QWERTY Keyboard + 2.6″ LCD: From the folks at Solder Party comes the Keyboard FeatherWing, an easy way to add a handheld QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6” color display (+ more) to your project! Nice hand-held size and great for typing with your thumbs, early 2000s-style.
The keyboard itself does not contain an MCU/CPU/SoC that you can program; you will need a board compatible with the Adafruit Feather Ecosystem. Once you plug it into the back, you have access to a mini ‘BlackBerry’-like display that you can use to create a nifty portable device.
PoE Splitter with USB Type C – 5V 2A – 100 MB Ethernet: Power over Ethernet (PoE) splitters can make your project wiring a breeze – and best of all they work to connect any 802.3af-capable router to any Ethernet device, even if it doesn’t natively support PoE! The splitter takes a unified PoE signal (data and power) from one RJ-45 cable, and then separates the data (Ethernet) and power (5 VDC regulated) into two different lines for non-PoE devices.
This is an economical, practical, high-performance, and reliable Isolated 5V 2A PoE Splitter with USB C Plug based on IEEE 802.3af standard. It can divide power and data signals from a network cable and can be used with any PoE injector that is compatible with IEEE 802.3af, and supply power and data for non-PoE network equipment.
Whew, that’s quite a few words – but basically: Connect this to your PoE switch or hub, then on the other side of the Ethernet cable, you’ll get Ethernet and a high-quality 5V power supply, up to 2 Amps.
Adafruit 2.13″ HD Tri-Color eInk / ePaper Display FeatherWing – – 250×122 RW Panel with SSD1680: Easy e-paper comes to your Feather, with this breakout that’s designed to make it a breeze to add a tri-color eInk display. Chances are you’ve seen one of those new-fangled ‘e-readers’ like the Kindle or Nook. They have gigantic electronic paper ‘static’ displays – that means the image stays on the display even when power is completely disconnected. The image is also high contrast and very daylight readable. It really does look just like printed paper!
Adafruit SGP40 Air Quality Sensor Breakout – VOC Index – STEMMA QT / Qwiic: *sniff* *sniff* … do you smell that? No need to stick your nose into a carton of milk anymore, you can build a digital nose with the SGP40 Multi-Pixel Gas Sensor, a fully integrated MOX gas sensor. This is a very fine air quality sensor from the sensor experts at Sensirion, with I2C interfacing so you don’t have to manage the heater and analog reading of a MOX sensor. It combines multiple metal-oxide sensing and heating elements on one chip to provide more detailed air quality signals.
The SGP40 has a ‘standard’ hot-plate MOX sensor, as well as a small microcontroller that controls power to the plate, reads the analog voltage and provides an I2C interface to read from. Unlike the CCS811, this sensor does not require I2C clock stretching. We currently have an Arduino library with examples of reading the raw value and also running the Sensirion algorithm to calculate VOC index but do not have Python support (the Sensirion library is in C and requires a port)
