“FLOW” (2024): Made With Open Source

Flow is an enchanting film about the journey of a cat. It is notable for a few reasons – no words are spoken as the cat makes friends, gets out of scrapes, and generally survives a (post human?) drowning world.

It is also the first Academy Award nominated movie made in Blender! With a budget of only $4 Million, it is a testament to the power of open source.

Blender spoke with the director Gints Zilbalodis:

…Blender’s mission, where a small, independent team with a limited budget is able to create a story that moves audiences worldwide, and achieve recognition with over 60 awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Animation and two Oscar nominations.

How did you learn Blender?

I learned a lot online, but it was great to have someone with more experience next to me (Konstantīns). He did a lot of rigging and was much more technical than me, so I could ask him for advice. Sometimes, I needed something specific in the animatic, like the deer moving in a spiral, and he would write a script to automate it. This was before Geometry Nodes.

Prototype of a Compute Module backpack ready!

OK, our 10164227-1004A1RLF Compute Module connectors came in, so we’re ready to fab this prototype of our Compute Module 4 or 5 backpack. Timon updated it to have an EYESPI connector to bring out some GPIO’s and make it easy to connect small displays. There’s so much packed on here; we’re worried about how we’re going to make a test jig for so many connectors! We may need to use an IO multiplexer to address so many pins with a microcontroller – while using a CM5 to do the test sounds ‘fun,’ it would not be good to have such a delicate board used for testing hundreds or thousands of these in the fabrication department.

As we round the corner on February you might be feeling the chill and staring forlornly at those mounting stacks of snow. Wilson Bentley saw much more. Bentley was the first person to accurately capture a snow flake on film. A recent New Yorker article goes over his life and journey to becoming a snowflake obsessive.

When the standard camera lens could not focus as closely as Bentley needed, he devised an ingenious solution, jury-rigging his beloved microscope to the camera’s accordion-like bellows. His finished apparatus was so long that he could no longer reach the focussing knob of the microscope while looking through the camera, so he fashioned an auxiliary-focussing mechanism out of wood and string. His other tools, he later noted in a piece he wrote for the magazine Popular Mechanics, were humble: “a pair of thick mittens, microscope slides, a sharp pointed wood splint, a feather, and a turkey wing or similar duster.”

Young Makers from MIT crafted this calligraphy bot. Via MIT Technology Review:

Gloria Zhu ’26 and Lee Liu ’26 set out to make a calligraphy machine during IAP 2024. They built its mechatronic parts in a month; then, fueled by Hershey’s dark chocolates, they put in many late nights in the Metropolis makerspace’s electronics mezzanine to finish the job. The resulting device can move its brush pen with five degrees of freedom, and its carriage moves up and down to vary the stroke width.

US Government releases Ghidra 11.3 NSA reverse engineering software

Ghidra is a open source software reverse engineering (SRE) framework developed by NSA’s Research Directorate. This framework includes a suite of full-featured, high-end software analysis tools that enable users to analyze compiled code on a variety of platforms including Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

The PyGhidra Python library, originally developed under the name Pyhidra, is a Python library that provides direct access to the Ghidra API within a native CPython 3 interpreter. PyGhidra contains some conveniences for setting up analysis on a given sample and running a Ghidra script locally. It also contains a Ghidra plugin to allow the use of CPython 3 from the Ghidra GUI.

TLV320DAC3100 is an I2S to headphone/speaker DAC

We’re working on getting some more / better I2S options in the shop – we like this TLC320DAC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8w81vmhw)for being able to drive stereo 16Ω headphones and also a single 4Ω 2.5W speaker. We’ve also had good experiences with the TLV320 series; the only annoyance is that we need to configure the DAC with I2C before using it. However, because a more advanced processor is inside, it can run an equalizer and control volume. There’s also a tone generator and headphone detection, and it looks like you can also generate MCLK from BCLK using the onboard PLL. It’s also affordable, at $1 in reel quantity. This breakout will help us get this chip working; it exposes everything you need to get started.

Making of Cyberpunk: A Virtual Production Experience

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ Academy Museum has a fantastic looking exhibit on the history of cyberpunk in cinema. Go check it out if you’re in Los Angeles! It’s running now through April 2026. More details on the Academy Museum’s website:

The Academy Museum’s exhibition features production materials, costumes, props, and concept art from iconic cyberpunk films including Blade Runner (USA, 1982), Tron (USA, 1982), and eXistenZ (Canada, 1999). It also spotlights international films like Sleep Dealer (Mexico/USA, 2008) and foundational animated features such as Ghost in the Shell (Japan, 1995). At the exhibition’s core, an immersive installation explores themes and visual motifs of cyberpunk and futurist films. With a voice-over scripted by writer-director Alex Rivera, the installation illustrates cyberpunk’s 20th-century origins and the new, global directions it has taken in the 21st century as it has expanded into genres like Afrofuturism (Neptune Frost, Rwanda/USA, 2021), Latinxfuturism (Alita: Battle Angel, USA, 2019), and Indigenous Futurism (Night Raiders, Canada/New Zealand, 2021).

Running on a raspberry pi pico, I’ve even made it use the original Gameboy speaker to use as an alarm. Runs on batteries in the original battery compartment and micro usb. Features: e-ink to bring you back to the days of needing a backlight to look at the screen

Tom’s Hardware talked with the maker to get more details:

We contacted Mod Room My, who confirmed more details about the build. The Pico is housed behind an old aftermarket Pokémon cartridge as it was necessary to trim it down to make room for the hardware, and he didn’t want to deface an original cartridge. The eInk panel used supports three colors: black, white, and red, which makes for a more visually interesting result. There were plans to use the original buttons to control the clock functions, but this idea was scrapped since the refresh rate takes longer on an eInk screen.

The invalid 68030 instruction that accidentally allowed the Mac Classic II to successfully boot up

This is the story of how Apple made a mistake in the ROM of the Macintosh Classic II that probably should have prevented it from booting, but instead, miraculously, its Motorola MC68030 CPU accidentally prevented a crash and saved the day by executing an undefined instruction.

“I’ve discovered an undocumented MC68030 instruction that performs a read-modify-write bus cycle and also changes the value of the A1 register.

This newly-discovered instruction turns out to be the glue that’s accidentally holding the Classic II together. Without this instruction modifying A1, the Classic II can’t boot. I’m confident that it was a mistake and not something intentional. A totally understandable mistake, at that. If the pesky 68030 hadn’t been hiding the bug from Apple’s ROM developers, there is no doubt they would have caught it before the Classic II shipped.

After all that, what’s the lesson we can learn from this story? I guess it’s that emulators can teach us new things about hardware that we never would have thought to look into! I bet this bug in the ROM would have gone undiscovered for all eternity if not for MAME providing emulation of the Classic II, which isn’t a particularly notable machine compared to more popular compact Macs like the SE/30 and Color Classic.”

Investors pump money into Silicon Valley startups but only a fraction of those start ups go the distance. The ones that fail can leave behind piles of unused equipment. A company called Silicon Valley Disposition liquidates assets of shuttered start ups (and more) through auctions. Anything from a “balloon launch station” to “20,000 e-scooters” are up for the bidding.

SVD is like a version of eBay, if eBay specialized in bioreactors, sold $956,000 welding robots and offered laptops by the hundred. The company doesn’t deliver merchandise to buyers, and it doesn’t guarantee whether the stuff actually works. Potential buyers register to bid online on SVD’s website, and once the auctions begin, they typically have from Tuesday to Thursday to make their offers. SVD runs 80 to 100 auctions a year, Carroll said, and winners are expected to pick up their gear in person from zombie office buildings or overflowing storerooms.
