Asteroid day index

Look to the skies because today is International Asteroid Day. Officially recognized by the UN to bring awareness to Asteroids.

In movies and media (and history) asteroids are often depicted as apocalyptic. While the plausible threat may be overstated, a true asteroid impact could wreak havoc. It’s important we study and monitor these minor planets. On the far less bleak side, Asteroids are a fascinating feature of our solar system.

“Asteroid Day brings the global space community together, to educate and learn about space, the history of our solar system, the future of space exploration, and planetary defense,” Markus Payer, Chair of the Asteroid Foundation said. “We want to attract the public and young people to this sector which plays an increasingly important role in the development of our economy and society. We thank our sponsors and partners and look forward to making Asteroid Day 2023 another success.”

I designed it for crayola pens with a 10.5mm tip, but I’ve included a customizer.

Meta’s Audiocraft research team has just released MusicGen, an open source deep learning language model that can generate new music based on text prompts and even be aligned to an existing song, The Decoder reported. It’s much like ChatGPT for audio, letting you describe the style of music you want, drop in an existing tune (optionally) and then clicking “Generate.” After a good chunk of time (around 160 seconds in my case), it spits out a short piece of all-new music based on your text prompts and melody.

Bungee cords are something nearly every maker will use at one point or another. And they are technology that you need to rely on in holding things fast and secure. So, knowing which cords are effective at that job and which aren’t is important.

Todd at Project Farm tested 14 different bungee cords by leaving them stretched in direct sunlight for 9 months, exposing them to UV degradation. The results are kind of shocking. Almost all of the cords badly degraded.

The bungee cord and rubber tarp straps tested were SmartStraps, HyperTough, Harbor Freight Haul-Master, Stalwart, Cartman, Horusdy, RhinoUSA, HDX, Sgt Knots, Nite Ize, xstrap, Husky, Amazing Straps, Keeper. Tests on the cords included tensile strength, at 6, 12, 18, and 24 inches of stretch, before and after UV exposure.

In the end, the rubber Amazing Straps ($3 at time of testing) held up the best. Todd was also impressed with the performance of the Sgt Knots bungees ($4 at time of testing) and the Home Depot HDX-branded cords.

This week’s EYE ON NPI (video) is going to fuel up your portable battery-powered designs with the Texas Instruments BQ27427 System-Side Impedance Track™ Single-Cell Battery Fuel Gauge, a powerful and inexpensive way to add high quality battery monitoring for charge-rate and aging tracking at the system side.

Lithium Ion / Polymer batteries – you love them for their low cost, high power density, and 3.7V nominal voltage, but keeping them recharged and letting people know exactly how much battery life is left is non-trivial.

Like most batteries, common LiPoly/LiIon’s start with a high peak voltage right after charging of about 4.2V, drop quickly to about 3.7V and then slowly drift down till they get to 3.0V at which point the cut-off circuitry disconnects until they are recharged. It’s really easy to tell when the battery is 90% or greater charge, just look for a voltage of 3.9V or higher. It’s also pretty easy to tell when they’re 10% or less, the voltage will be 3.3V or lower.

But that in-between section is tough because the slope during discharge is very shallow and the voltage changes quite a bit with aging, temperature, and discharge rate. So while there are battery monitors that can use just the voltage across the battery terminals, they’re not going to be as precise as a coulomb-counter design that takes into account both voltage and current.

From TI’s White Paper on the topic:

“An impedance-based battery fuel gauge, as the name implies, uses the measured impedance of the battery’s cells as a key input to its remaining capacity predictions. The gauge measures and stores in real-time the battery pack’s resistance as a function of state-of-charge. The real-time resistance profiles along with the stored battery open-circuit voltage tables (open-circuit voltage vs. state-of-charge) enables the gauge to predict the battery pack’s discharge curve (by adjusting for the IR drop) under any system-use condition and temperature.

The algorithm uses current integration (coulomb counting) when the system is ON, and open-circuit voltage measurement when the system is OFF or in SLEEP to adjust remaining state-of-charge (RSOC) up or down (for charge or discharge) the predicted discharge curve. By using the predicated discharge curve, the gauge can accurately calculate the battery pack’s remaining discharge capacity (RM) and the system’s run-time to empty (RTTE).

Since an impedance track gauge continuously adjusts RM and FCC for impedance and the change in impedance, rate and temperature inefficiencies and aging are inherently taken into account, enabling the gauge to maintain a high level of accuracy throughout the life of the system.”

Texas Instruments has a few chips in the Impedance Track family – the BQ27427 charger is the latest to come out. It’s very small, coming as a 9-pin 1.6×1.6 BGA with the center pad being a shared ground so you don’t need plugged vias to use. It’s also really easy to use, requiring only 2 small stabilization capacitors. Internal temperature monitoring means you don’t need a separate thermistor.

The high-side 7 mΩ current sense resistor also means one less part on the BOM. I2C pins are used to communicate with the monitor and set battery characteristics. There’s also an optional input that can be used to connect to a mechanical or electrical battery insertion switch or to an external thermistor, and an optional output that can be used as a battery low indicator.

Because so much is integrated, and the chip is so small, its very easy to pop it into your design between the battery terminal and the VBAT lines that go to your battery charger and power supply. The peak battery voltage and capacity are easy to look up since they’re written on the battery.

For other configuration settings you can use BQStudio / GaugeStudio with the TI battery devboard to characterize and customize the learning cycle. Either way, you will need to write the configuration to the sensor on every boot.

Pick up the Texas Instruments BQ27427 and other chips from the Impedance Track family stocked at DigiKey for immediate shipment. Order today and you’ll get precision lipoly monitoring that will work with any setup or battery configuration by tomorrow afternoon!

The Adafruit Feather RP2040 RFM69 board is another board Adafruit lovingly refer to as part of its ‘RadioFruits’ line of microcontrollers. The board is very similar to the RP2040 with LoRa, but this one features an RFM69 Packet Radio (868 or 915MHz). It’s great for sending packets of data between different boards

You can communicate up to five kilometres, but of course that’s under ideal conditions and with a proper antenna. Speaking of antennas, you will need one for this board to work, and you can make your own with a small piece of wire, or you can buy one and use the on-board connector.

They give the Feather a 9/10, saying “A good low-cost radio and micro.”.

You don’t have to have read The Neverending Story to have a sense that books are sort of like portals. Each one takes you somewhere else. Isobelle Ouzman has made that metaphor real by carving worlds into books. Here’s more from COLOSSAL:

Open one of Isobelle Ouzman’s books, and you’ll be transported to a whimsical world of flora and fauna. The Bratislava-based artist…carves pages of found novels and other tomes into intricate paper labyrinths of forests and meadows. Often occupied by a lone hare or fox, the fairytale scenes are imbued with a quiet, calm sense of mystery about the machinations of the imagined environments and their inhabitants.

Ouzman shares that she gravitates toward mass-produced volumes in poor condition. “Book size, depth, and paper texture play a big role in my decision as well, and I often need to hold a book in my hands before I can visualise a new artwork,” she says. The carving and drawing process depends on both the physical object and the intended narrative, taking between three weeks and three months to complete.

This helpful post from NPR, which was published last June, aims to detangle some of the mythology surrounding Juneteenth:

African Americans throughout the nation celebrate Juneteenth, but who knows what actually happened on June 19, 1865? As the nation observes the second federal legal holiday marking the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas, there are a number of misconceptions about the historical event that keep getting repeated.

There are tons of options for celebrating the June 19 holiday across the five boroughs, Via Hyperallergic

This Monday, June 19, Juneteenth will be observed in the United States. The holiday marks the day in 1865 when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Texas, nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the decree. More than 250,000 enslaved people were finally freed. In 2021, President Biden declared June 19 a federal holiday.

But it’s worth noting that Juneteenth celebrations have been ongoing for more than 150 years. This year, art organizations across New York City are honoring the day in a variety of formats — from film screenings to dance performances to portrait making. Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of the city’s most exciting and art-filled Juneteenth events, many of them open to the public and free of charge.

In this Stumpy Nubs video, James shows how you can take the “scary sharp” chisel sharpening method (using 4 levels of course-to-fine sandpaper on a flat piece of glass) to the next level using 320 and 400 Cubitron II discs for the first two sharpening passes.

The scary sharp method works great, but it can be tedious and time-consuming, especially if you’re trying to restore a chipped or super dull tool or tuning up a brand new chisel. The ceramic-based Cubitron discs help accelerate that process. From there, you can switch to regular 600 and 1000 grit aluminum oxide discs for the final 2 passes. And then leather stropping for a final polish.

At the end of the video, James recommends a kit that Taylor Tools sells which includes a piece of 5” x 11” dead-flat 5/16” thick float glass, a selection of 5” 3M PSA sanding discs (2 each 320 and 400 Cubitron II discs and 2 each 600 and 1000 grit PSA aluminum oxide discs) and 14 each 1/2” diameter urethane PSA bumpers — all for $25. If you try to buy all this items separately on Amazon, it would cost you as much or more than this. I’ve bought tools from Taylor before and highly recommend them. Unfortunately, since the Stumpy Nubs video came out, they are back ordered.

Adafruit RP2040 Prop-Maker Feather with I2S Audio Amplifier: The Adafruit Feather series gives you lots of options for a small, portable, rechargeable microcontroller board. By picking a feather and stacking on a FeatherWing you can create advanced projects quickly. One popular combo is our Feather M4 or Feather RP2040 with a Prop-Maker FeatherWing on top to create animatronics or props that boot up instantly and can drive LEDs, and small speakers.

We’ve used the Prop-Maker FeatherWing to make lots of lil robots, swords, and other prop projects. However, what if we made it even easier for people to make props? What if we made it so many projects can be built with minimal or no soldering at all? Yeah that would be pretty nice!

Thus, the creation of the Adafruit RP2040 Prop-Maker Feather: an all-in-one combination of the Feather RP2040 with a Prop-Maker FeatherWing with a few tweaks based on feedback from expert prop-builders. Perfect for fitting into your next prop build! This Feather will unlock the ‘Imagineer’ inside all of us, with tons of stuff packed in to make sabers & swords, props, toys, mini robots, cosplay pieces, and more.
