Plenty of people’s bucket lists include a trip to the poles to see the auroras. Within the coming years, the phenomena may increase as we approach the upcoming solar maximum in the summer of 2025. SyFy shares how it may be easier to check it off your list.

Having traveled through space at a blistering two million miles per hour, a wave of ejected plasma struck Earth’s electromagnetic field, generating a geomagnetic storm. By the time it arrived, it had been upgraded not once but twice to Severe (level 4). Unusually high levels of energy in the atmosphere pushed the aurora much farther toward the equator than is typical. As a result, nature’s most beautiful light show, usually reserved for the brave few living at higher latitudes, made a surprise appearance in as many as 30 states in the U.S. as well as parts of Scotland and norther Europe.

All roads lead to Rome. Certainly some of the most impressive engineering feats to come from the Romans were the roads. They built a massive, interconnected and meticulously crafted road system. Before now you’d probably need to rely on some ancient scrolls and stone engravings.

OmnesViae puts all the info online. If you want travel the Roman route just enter the cities. More info from BigThink:

OmnesViae leans heavily on the Tabula Peutingeriana, the closest thing we have to a genuine itinerarium (“road map”) of the Roman Empire. Ancient Rome certainly had maps, but none from that time survive. The Peutinger Map, a 13th-century parchment scroll, is a copy of a much older map, which is only two “possibles” away from the Steward of the Roads himself: It may date from the 4th or 5th century, and that version may be a copy of a map prepared for Augustus around year 1 AD.

Shared by feiticeir0 on Thingiverse, this neat tripod and camera support comes in handy!

This a support to be able to attach a Tripod to a Raspberry PI and a Camera module and use my 4inch LCD .

I wanted to use my RPi waveshare 4inch LCD with the camera and display the video and/or photos while using it with some ML projects.

Because the HQ camera already brings a 1/4” female thread adapter and I had a tripod that I wanted to use, so I’ve design this.

To be able to use it with a tripod, just add a Knurled Thumb Nut 2012.78.7, like this ones on Amazon

and push it there in the hole with a hot solder iron to melt the plastic.

Use some standoffs from the Raspberry PI to the camera support.

See the full project on Thingiverse.

This is a water pipe stake for DIY garden watering systems

There are two versions, closed top and open top (mk2). I have made the open top version to be used with a tie of some kind or elastic band.

These are designed to keep the water pipe off the ground and not get covered in soil. I use 15mm plastic piping attached at one end to a hose on a timer, the other end is just capped off. I’ve made the holes in the spike big enough to take any pipe you decide to use. feel free to print them larger or smaller depending on your needs.

Taylor Swift is popular, like almost Raspberry Pi level popular. Her mega-sold-out Eras tour brings back these interactive crowd bracelets. Every concert goer is given an LED bracelet that can be synced to the music and create massive designs.

The effect seems to be created by shining infrared light on the built in IR sensors. Along with IR sensors the bracelets can also be fitted with RFID, and motion sensors. Slate got into the details for the 1989 tour and we can only assume the tech got more refined:

We use infra-red light, which is essentially the technology that’s in your remote control. It’s very simple but very powerful—think of it as installing a very powerful set of remote controls around the stadium, and then sending a signal that triggers the lighting. We use, essentially, invisible light to create visible light, and to synchronize people with each other.

We want to make an object that feels like magic, so there’s no button, there’s nothing to activate—it will just turn on at some point. We want to surprise you.

Wonderful piece by Austin Gilkeson on up on Tor.com that discusses the fluid roles spirituality, nature, and folklore play within director Miyazaki’s various fictional worlds. Gilkeson observes that unlike many other fantasy stories, the drama of Miyazaki’s various works doesn’t hinge on the simple conflict of a believer (usually a child) trying to convince a typical nonbeliever (usually an adult) that magic or magical creatures are real. Instead, the magical and non-magical elements of the worlds intermingle to various degrees while characters navigate the relatable, beautiful, and complex issues we all face (pain and longing of growing up, fear of losing a parent, loving someone you can’t be with).

Last fall my 2yo daughter and I were stuck together in the house for days on end while she learned to use the potty. It was more stressful and exasperating than I’d anticipated and I found myself turning on the TV more than I’d like to admit. I felt very guilty about that. I was pretty on edge during those few days, which sounds silly looking back. Towards the end of the week, things were clicking and I felt good enough about taking my daughter on a short walk around a pond near our house. My mind was still in potty-mode and I was watching her for any signs we might need to turn around and head back. I was still pretty stuck in the lingering stress from cleaning pee up off the floor all week and the guilt of losing my patience more than usual. I looked over and noticed my daughter was picking things up off the ground and putting them into her empty snack cup. I assumed it was rocks. Both of my kids love to bring rocks inside for some reason. But then she put her hand in and pulled out an acorn and said, “Look Mommy. It’s for my Totoro.” She put the acorn in my hand. I still have it now, in a drawer, over 6 months later.

It’s not that children are pure and innocent and unquestioning—Miyazaki’s young protagonists are thoroughly human and flawed. It’s that they’re open to the spirits in ways adults are not. They don’t mediate their experience of nature and the world through the rituals of religion or calcified worldviews. Mr. Kusakabe may need to visit the camphor tree shrine to speak to Totoro, but Satsuki and Mei don’t—they can find their way to him from their own yard. Adults see what they expect to see. Children have few expectations for what is and isn’t lurking out there in the world; they’re the ones who glimpse shadows moving in the gloom of an abandoned amusement park, a goldfish returned in the shape of a girl, or a small white spirit walking through the grass.

USB / DC / Solar Lithium Ion/Polymer charger – Rev C: Make your projects to go green this summer with our specialized USB/Solar Lithium Ion Polymer Battery charger! This charger is a very unique design, perfect for outdoor projects, or DIY iPod chargers. Just you think you know most everything about rulers, tape measures, and similar tools, you learn something new. I always thought that, when someone used the term rule instead of ruler, they were just being pretentious. It turns out, as James points out in this Stumpy Nubs video, there is a difference.

A ruler starts with the first mark (e.g. 1″) inset from the edge. Rulers are used in education, working with paper, and other applications where you want confidence in a beginning mark.

A rule has the beginning measurement at a well-ground edge with no initial masurement. A rule is used in woodworking and other situations where you are measuring from inside angles and the like. Cool! I just put a new wrinkle on my brain.

A ROM emulator designed for the Amstrad CPC. Shared by Hackster.io:

The emulator is designed for use with an Amstrad CPC, a color home computer first released by Amstrad in 1984 as a competitor to the popular ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. Like many machines of the era, it included an integrated ROM while loading add-in software from cassette tape — but additional ROMs could be added in order to load software instantaneously.

“Multiple upper and lower ROMs can be stored in the Pico’s 2MB onboard flash,” Callow explains of his design. “1 lower and 8 upper ROMS are supported. A control ROM is included which allows the selection of which ROMs (from the flash) are loaded into the available slots. The Pico is overclocked to 225 MHZ, with one core providing ROM emulation whilst the other handles ROM switching and processing commands from the CPC (with the help of a PIO [Programmable Input/Output] state machine).”
