Sparkfun patent

SparkFun Hooks a Patent Troll, will post more about this later (just saw this now before our shows tonight) –

Wait wait wait. You’re suing us over the pcDuino from 2016? We stopped selling that board in 2017. Nothing against pcDuino, it was a neat little single board computer for its time, but of all the products we sell you pick that board? Why? I suspect it has something to do with Al’s previous wins against companies unfortunate enough to use a processor that used the term ‘media’ in their datasheets. Or perhaps it was the approximate date that web.archive.org had data on SparkFun’s website. It’s 2016 – their patent doesn’t expire until 2018…

We’ve sold 221 units over the entire time we carried the pcDuino. You want to sue us for $500 worth of made-up royalties to use your bogus patent? Sure. Come get it.

We have a new guide: Key Pad and Matrix Scanning in CircuitPython

The keypad module, available in the latest CircuitPython 7.0.0 builds, scans a set of keys or buttons in the background, and gives you key-pressed and key-released events. The keypad module provides three different kinds of scanners:

  • Keys: Each key is connected to a separate pin.
  • KeyMatrix: The keys are wired in a row-column matrix, with or without diodes. This is typically how typing keyboards, music keyboards, and telephone-style keypads are wired.
  • ShiftRegisterKeys: The keys are connected to an external parallel-in serial-out shift register. The keys are read by clocking data from the shift register into a single input pin.

Each time a key is pressed or released, a scanner will record an Event in an EventQueue. Each event gives the key number, and says whether the key has been pressed or released. Your program can read the events sequentially.

The background scanning does debouncing as well, so you don’t have to worry about handling that yourself.

Check out the new Guide: we’ll explain how each of the scanners works, and give you some simple examples.

DIY Game Show

3d_printing_hero-twos.gif

This week Dylan Herrada published a new guide showing us how to create a neat DIY quiz show controller system. The system is really well designed, with 3d printed enclosures, and it uses the Circuit Playground Bluefruit to communicate with a computer or mobile device.

Reading through this guide, I wondered if there were any other game show style guides on the Adafruit Learning System. After a bit of digging, I found the Press Your Button game by Roberto Marquez, the Wireless Game Show Poppers guide by itaparacade, and my favorite, the PyPortal Trivia Time with the Open Trivia Database.

While the Wireless Game Show Poppers guide may use equipment that is no longer for sale, I still find it to be a good resource to learn how to modify and hack existing technology to create something new.

[The term SciArt] seems to declare that you don’t need to treat art and science as opposing disciplines…new terms are proposed to tell everyone that they should be divided independently. However, SciArt is more like encouraging everyone to bravely explore new areas. People with a scientific background can try to make creations, while those with an art background can learn science and apply it to their art practice. It seems to declare that you don’t need to treat art and science as opposing disciplines. Just boldly try to work on art and science together!

NASA is using new composite materials for future low-cost deep space missions.

via NASA

The primary objective of the ACS3 mission is to demonstrate the successful deployment of the composite boom solar sail in low-Earth orbit. After reaching space, the mission’s CubeSat spacecraft will deploy its solar power arrays and then begin unfurling its solar sail via four booms that span the diagonals of the square and unspool to reach 7 meters (about 23 feet) in length. After approximately 20 or 30 minutes when the solar sail is fully deployed, the square-shaped solar sail measures approximately 9 meters (about 30 feet) per side or about the size of a small apartment. A suite of onboard digital cameras will obtain images of the sail during and after deployment in order to assess its shape and alignment.

All data can be turned into music, probably. And you can most definitely do it with weather data. Here’e more via Bobby Owsinski

Dr. Smart (a fitting name) used a month of data of Christchurch (the second largest city in New Zealand) temperature, rainfall, windspeed and direction, as well as other rainfall, river and sea levels. These were then fed into a computer that converted the data into a musical score that played those hourly values at a rate of four per second. Different instruments were assigned to each different weather elements, like wind (percussion – cymbals), rain (bells) temperature (strings), river flow (flutes), and rainfall (brass).

It’s not always feasible to just go out and upgrade the drone, but there are some things you can do to give the drone you have a little bit of a boost in making it more powerful.

1. Install More Efficient Propellers
Propellers play a very crucial part when it comes to making a drone fly. Propellers convert rotational motion into thrust that pushes the drone up and enables it to stay in the air….

Welcome to drone day on the Adafruit blog. Every Monday we deliver the latest news, products and more from the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), quadcopter and drone communities. Hopefully some of this drone footage will be published – albatross and rockhopper penguin colonies oh my! From Bird Guides:

“Using drone surveys and deep learning gives us an alternative that is remarkably accurate, less disruptive and significantly easier,” said Madeline C Hayes, a remote-sensing analyst at the Duke University Marine Lab. “One person, or a small team, can do it, and the equipment you need to do it isn’t all that costly or complicated.”
