This is such a great project! Check it out, from Team MakersUPV: Mireia Flores, Isabel Fernández Palou, Javier Poveda, Pablo Fernández Silva, Jaime Laborda up on Hackster.io.

Why this project?
Currently there are on the market two types of pill dispensers: non-electric and automatic ones. Although the majority of them have a reminder mechanism (not always suitable for people with visual or sensory impairments), both types normally require a person who organizes the pills daily or weekly in different compartments, making the patient a dependent person. Nowadays due to Covid-19, family members or assistants to the elderly have more difficulties to take care of dependent persons.

That is why we saw the necessity to create a smart pill dispenser which doesn’t need a handmade pill organization, accessible to disabled people, and has the capacity to help the patients be more independent.

Happy Women’s History Month! All through March we will be celebrating women who have made an impact. From celebrities of their time to some overlooked heroes, join in as we post Monday through Friday.

You can also follow along on social media with #WHM21 #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenInSTEM

Last year was the 100th anniversary of the 19th Ammendment. Because of 2020 there wasn’t really time to honor the theme. So once again the theme will be Valiant Women of the Vote.

Mrs despard second from the right at the front row and news photo 1612372913

Oprah Magezine has a nice history of why we celebrate in March:

It all began with one single day in 1908 in New York City when thousands of women united and marched for better labor laws, conditions, and the right to vote. A year later on February 28, in a gathering organized by members of the Socialist Party, suffragists and socialists gathered again in Manhattan for what they called the first International Woman’s Day.

MIT researchers fabricated a new lens that shifts focus without physically tilting or shifting. The design may improve on existing zoom lenses.

Rather than relying on a material’s fixed curvature to direct light, the researchers looked to modify GSST-based metalens in a way that the focal length changes with the material’s phase.

In their new study, they fabricated a 1-micron-thick layer of GSST and created a “metasurface” by etching the GSST layer into microscopic structures of various shapes that refract light in different ways.

On its journey to the sun the Parker Solar Probe captured this great picture of Venus. The NASA team was a bit surprised because they didn’t know that the specialized camera would pick up near-infrared wavelengths of light.

Via Gizmodo:

That WISPR can do this comes as a complete surprise to the Parker team, according to Angelos Vourlidas, the WISPR project scientist from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). This device is “tailored and tested for visible light observations,” said Vourlidas in the NASA statement, saying they “expected to see clouds, but the camera peered right through to the surface.”

“WISPR effectively captured the thermal emission of the Venusian surface,” added Brian Wood, an astrophysicist and WISPR team member from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, in the NASA release.

Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole discovered in 1964. Its distance is around 6000 light years and is 16 times the mass of our Sun.

via SyFy

But Cygnus X-1 is special. It was the first. The first ever detected, that is, and is still one of the closest we know. But new observations show that a few things we thought we knew about it weren’t right, including its distance, mass, and even how it formed, which means astronomers will need to rethink some details on how stars collapse to create these objects.

Cygnus X-1 was discovered in 1964, when what were essentially fancy Geiger counters were launched into space on a series of suborbital flights. They detected X-rays coming from the direction of the constellation Cygnus. Radio observations made in 1971 pinpointed the position of the source on the sky, which surprisingly was a luminous blue O-type star called HD 226868. These are massive and powerful stars, but don’t make X-rays as strongly as was being detected.

Remember when a unique interstellar object entered our solar system and then accelerated away? And we called it Oumuamua? And for a moment we thought it might be an alien ship? And then we all forgot because 2020 happened? Israeli-American physicist Are Loeb remembered, and he’s published a book exploring the possibilities of just what the only known interstellar visitor our solar system has ever had might possibly be? Here’s an exploration of Loeb’s ideas from Celestial Objects:

The reaction to Avi Loeb’s new book Extraterrestrial (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2021) has been quick in coming and dual in nature. I’m seeing a certain animus being directed at the author in social media venues frequented by scientists, not so much for suggesting the possibility that ‘Oumuamua is an extraterrestrial technological artifact, but for triggering a wave of misleading articles in the press. The latter, that second half of the dual reaction, has certainly been widespread and, I have to agree with the critics, often uninformed.

But let’s try to untangle this. Because my various software Net-sweepers collect most everything that washes up on ‘Oumuamua, I’m seeing stark headlines such as “Why Are We So Afraid of Extraterrestrials,” or “When Will We Get Serious about ET?” I’m making those particular headlines up, but they catch the gist of many of the stories I’ve seen. I can see why some of the scientists who spend their working days digging into exoplanet research, investigate SETI in various ways or ponder how to build the spacecraft that are helping us understand the Solar System would be nonplussed.

LEGO won’t let Daft Punk break up. In fact, Raspberry Pi can make Daft Punk minifigures, or any LEGO minigure, play its own music. Here’s more from Raspberry Pi Blog:

After some poking around, Dennis realised that the LEGO Dimensions toy pad is a three-in-one NFC reader with its own light show. He hooked it up to a Raspberry Pi and developed a Python application to play music when LEGO Dimension Minifigures are placed on the toy pad. So, if an Elvis minifigure is placed on the reader, you’ll hear Elvis’s music.

Today we celebrate Dr. Aprille J. Ericsson-Jackson, an American aerospace engineer and the first African-American woman to receive a Ph.D in mechanical engineering from Howard University and the first African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. in Engineering at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Here’s more from the USA Science and Engineering Festival:

In her lofty career as an aerospace engineer and instrument manager at NASA’s prestigious Goddard Space Flight Center, Aprille Joy Ericsson has played a key role in designing spacecraft and instruments that contribute to our greater understanding of the Sun-Earth connection, space science and Earth itself.  But her inspiration to pursue a life of science and engineering began as a youngster while viewing milestone NASA spacecraft launches on TV as well as participating in unforgettable science outreach experiences as a student.

Says Aprille: “There were several instances that fostered my interest during childhood:  The first was watching the Apollo missions on TV in school in first grade; the second was me winning second place in the 8th grade science fair where I built my first science instrument, and third, attending the MIT UNITE science outreach program for minority students (now called Minority Introduction to Engineering & Science, or MITES) which I participated in during the summer of my junior year in high school.”
