Dulce de leche (pronounced "DOOL-se de LE-che," meaning candy of milk) is a rich syrup similar in flavor to caramel. It is a common ingredient in South American desserts. If you want to add a delicious sweet flavor to your desserts, it's easy to make your own dulce de leche at home. Most recipes involve boiling or baking condensed milk until it reduces into a syrup. You can also use regular milk mixed with sugar to produce dulce de leche.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Boiling Condensed Milk

  1. Peel the label off of a can of sweetened condensed milk. Search your supermarket for sweetened condensed milk. It is usually in the baking section. Take off as much of the label as you can. For the sticky portion, you can use a wet sponge to scrub the remainder of the label off.[1]
Make Dulce De Leche Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Read the cans carefully. Containers for condensed milk look very similar to evaporated milk, and evaporated milk won’t work for making dulce de leche.
    • Get multiple cans if you want to make more dulce de leche.
  2. Place the can in a pot and cover it with water. Stand the can on the bottom of the pot. Then add water until the water is at least above the top of the can. Make sure the pot is tall enough that you can completely cover the can with water while it’s standing up.[2]

    • Don’t fill the pot all the way to the top or it could overflow when the water starts boiling.
    • Depending on the size of the pot, you can put multiple cans in here at the same time for even more dulce de leche.
    • The water can be any temperature, but pouring in water that is already hot will make the water boil faster.
  3. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Turn on a high flame and wait for the water to boil. When bubbles start rising to the surface, you know the water is boiling. At this point, reduce the flame and let the pot simmer.[3]

  4. Let it simmer for 2-3 hours on a low flame. Once the water has boiled, reduce the flame to a low setting. This should bring the water to a light simmer. Let the pot simmer for 2 to 3 hours, depending on how dark you want your dulce de leche.[4]

Make Dulce De Leche Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • The longer you let the condensed milk simmer, the darker the dulce de leche will be. If you prefer lighter dulce de leche, take the cans out after 2 hours. Wait longer if you want a darker dulce de leche.
  5. Use tongs to remove the can from the water. Once the can has boiled long enough, remove it with a pair of tongs. This stops the cooking process so your dulce de leche is exactly how you want it.[5]

  6. Let the can cool completely before opening it. After you remove the can, set it down somewhere safe and let it cool. This could take several hours.[6]

Make Dulce De Leche Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Do not attempt to open the can while it’s still hot. The contents are under pressure, and opening it too early could cause hot dulce de leche to spray out and burn you.
    • When you do open the can, the dulce de leche should have a thick, syrupy consistency and pour out easily.
  7. Store the sealed can at room temperature for up to 3 months. An unopened can of dulce de leche will stay fresh for up to 3 months at room temperature. Simply place the can in your cupboard and use it when you want to.[7]
Make Dulce De Leche Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • If you’ve opened the can, you can pour it into an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to 3 weeks.

[Edit]Cooking Condensed Milk in the Oven

  1. Pour condensed milk into an x baking dish. Open up the can and empty its contents into the dish. Spread the milk around with a spoon or spatula if it doesn’t cover the entire bottom of the dish.[8]

    • You can pour in multiple cans for this method for a bigger serving of dulce de leche. Just be careful not to overflow the baking pan.
  2. Cover the baking dish with tin foil. Rip off a layer of tin foil large enough to cover the dish. Use more than one sheet if you have to. Tuck the foil under the sides of the dish so it stays secure during the baking process.[9]

  3. Place the baking dish inside a larger baking dish. This larger dish should be large enough so the smaller dish can sit in it comfortably. It should also have taller sides than the smaller dish so it doesn't overflow when you add water.[10]

Make Dulce De Leche Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • For an x bowl, a x would be large enough.
  4. Add water until it reaches ¾ the height of the smaller dish. This water surrounds the original dish so when it starts boiling, the water reduces the sugar in the condensed milk.[11]

    • This water can be any temperature, but if it’s already hot, it will make the boiling process faster.
  5. Bake the milk at for 90 minutes. Keep an eye on the water level as the milk bakes. If water is evaporating, use a pitcher to add more so it stays at the desired level.[12]

Make Dulce De Leche Step 12 Version 2.jpg
    • If you feel unsteady transferring a dish full of water to the oven without spilling it, you can put the dishes in the oven without the water. Then use a pitcher to fill the dish.
  6. Remove the dishes from the oven and stir the milk. After 90 minutes, the condensed milk should break down enough and produce dulce de leche. Complete the job by removing the foil covering. Then use a spatula or spoon to stir the syrup until it combines. Break down any solid pieces that have formed.[13]

    • The dulce de leche should have a thick, syrupy consistency and have a similar color to caramel.
    • You could also pour the milk into a blender for a more thorough mixing.
  7. Refrigerate the dulce de leche for up to 3 weeks. If you don’t use the dulce de leche right away, you can store it in the refrigerator. Store the mixture in an airtight container or jar and place it in the refrigerator. It should last 3 weeks if properly stored.[14]

Make Dulce De Leche Step 14 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Making Dulce de Leche with Regular Milk

  1. Pour 1 quart (0.9 liters) of whole milk into a pot. Make sure this pot is large enough so the milk won’t over flow when it starts boiling. 1 quart (0.9 liters) of milk will produce about 1 cup (0.24 liters) of dulce de leche, so use more milk if you need more dulce de leche.[15]

    • You can also use different types of milk for a different taste. Coconut milk works for a vegan option, and goat milk produces a different flavor.[16]
  2. Add 1 cup (128 g) of sugar. If you prefer your dulce de leche even sweeter, you can add 1 ¼ cups (160 g) of sugar. If you prefer it less sweet, add only ¾ cup (96 g) of sugar.[17]

    • If you’d like, you can also add some vanilla for flavor. Put either a split vanilla bean or of vanilla extract.
  3. Stir the mixture over a medium flame. Place the pot on the stove over a medium flame. Stir until all the sugar has dissolved.[18]

    • After all the sugar has dissolved, you can stir in 0.25 tsp (5 g) of baking soda to prevent the milk from coagulating. This is optional, but will produce a smoother dulce de leche.
  4. Let the milk boil for 90 to 120 minutes, stirring regularly. Once all the sugar has dissolved, leave the pot on a medium flame and allow it to boil. Stir the mixture regularly to help it reduce and prevent it from burning.[19]

Make Dulce De Leche Step 18 Version 2.jpg
    • As the milk reduces, it will start changing color from white to caramel. This is a good sign and means that your dulce de leche is nearing completion.
    • The amount of time you let the milk boil depends on how dark you like your dulce de leche. If you prefer it lighter, take it off at 90 minutes. If you want it darker, leave it on a full 2 hours.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat and let the mixture cool. Place the pot on an unlit burner on the stovetop and allow it to cool. Stir it one final time while it’s cooling.[20]

Make Dulce De Leche Step 19 Version 2.jpg
    • Making dulce de leche this way may produce more chunks and solid pieces than using condensed milk. This is normal. It will still have a syrupy consistency.
    • If you prefer your dulce de leche extra smooth, you can pour it through a strainer to mix out any solid pieces left behind. This is optional and doesn’t affect the final taste.
  6. Pour the mixture into an airtight jar and refrigerate for up to 3 weeks. If you don’t use the dulce de leche right away, you can store it for several weeks. Transfer it into an airtight jar or container and place it in the refrigerator. It can last about 3 weeks if stored properly.[21]

Over time, the heels of your shoes will wear down from wearing and walking in them and you may need to replace them. If you have a high heel, then all you need is to put in a new tip before you can walk in them again. If the heel’s worn on a dress shoe, then you need to replace it in order to fix it. Your heels may also get dirty, scuffed, or torn while you wear them, but you can easily clean and make repairs on them.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Fixing a High Heel Tip

  1. Get a set of replacement heel tips that match your heel. Replacement heel tips are small rubber pieces with metal dowels attached to them so you can put them in your shoe. You can either measure the height and width of your existing heel tip or buy a multipack that has different sizes in it. Make sure the color of the heel tip matches the one on your shoe or else it will clash.[1]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 1.jpg
    • You can buy replacement heel tips from a shoe store or online.
  2. Pull out the tip of the heel with a pair of needlenose pliers. Grab the rubber end on the bottom of your high heel with a pair of needlenose pliers and slowly pull it straight out. You may have to rotate or shimmy the tip out of place since it will have a tight fit. Once you remove the tip from the shoe, you can throw it away.[2]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 2.jpg
    • If the rubber on the tip is completely worn away, then grab the metal dowel instead.
    • Don’t grab above the rubber tip since you could damage the actual heel of your shoe.
  3. Push the new tip into the hole on the heel. Take one of the replacement heel tips and feed the end with the metal dowel into the hole on the bottom of the heel. Try to line up the shape of the tip and heel so it’s easier to make adjustments later on. Push the new tip in as far as you can by hand.[3]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 3.jpg
    • Set the shoe on a sturdy surface so you can push the tip in further.
    • Be careful not to apply too much force to your shoe heel since you could cause it to break off.
  4. Tap the new heel tip into place with a hammer. Hold the shoe sturdy on a stable surface with your nondominant hand. Gently tap the bottom of the heel tip with a hammer to push it into the heel further. Continue tapping the heel tip slowly into the heel until the edges are flush with one another.[4]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 4.jpg
    • Don’t hit the hammer too hard since you could break the heel or bend the heel tip.
  5. Turn the tip so it lines up with the rest of the heel. Grip the sides of the heel tip with your needlenose pliers and slowly turn the heel tip away. Keep rotating the heel tip in the heel until the curves on the back of the heel line up. Once the heel tip is aligned with the heel, you’re ready to wear your shoes again.[5]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 5.jpg

[Edit]Replacing the Heels on Dress Shoes

  1. Buy a replacement heel for the shoe you’re repairing. You can usually find replacement heels online or at a shoe store. Compare the width, length, and thickness of the replacement heel to the one on your shoes to make sure they are the right fit. Make sure the bottom grip on the heel has the amount of traction you need so you don’t slip later on.[6]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 6.jpg
    • Replacement heels usually cost around $25 USD for a pair.
    • If you can’t find a replacement heel that matches the size of your shoe exactly, then get the next largest one so you can trim off the excess.
  2. Pull the heel off of the shoe with a pair of pliers. Grip the rubber on the edge of your heel and slowly pull it backward. Hold the toe of the shoe down with your nondominant hand to get better leverage. Continue pulling the rubber part of the heel up until it comes off completely.[7]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 7.jpg
    • Many times, you only need to remove the rubber piece on the heel, also known as the top lifts. If the heel platform is damaged, then you also need to remove it the same way.
  3. Use a belt sander to remove excess glue and flatten the bottom of the shoe. Put on safety glasses before using the belt sander so you don’t get any dust in your eyes. Turn on the sander and carefully hold the bottom of the shoe by the heel against the belt. Make sure the shoe bottom is flat against the sander so it smooths out a level surface for the new heel. Check the bottom of the shoe every few seconds to see if it’s flat.[8]
Fix a Shoe Heel Step 8.jpg
    • You can also use 120-grit sandpaper, but it will be more difficult to get the heel perfectly level.
    • Don’t touch the belt sander while it’s still running since it will cause serious injury.
  4. Apply contact glue to the shoe bottom and new heel and let it dry for 15 minutes. Contact glue adheres to itself and makes a firm connection between the pieces. Use the glue applicator to spread a thin layer of glue on the back of the replacement heel and the bottom of your shoe. Leave the glue to dry for at least 10-15 minutes so it gets tacky and adheres better.[9]

    • You can buy contact glue from your local hardware or craft store.
    • Don’t push the heel onto the bottom of the shoe yet since the glue needs to set beforehand.
    • Work in a well-ventilated area since contact glue can create fumes that may cause irritation.
  5. Push the heel onto the bottom of the shoe. After the glue dries for 10-15 minutes, line up the heel as best as you can with the bottom of the shoe. When you have the heel lined up, push it down onto the shoe so it makes a firm connection. Apply continuous pressure to the heel for 30-60 seconds so the heel and shoe stay in place. The glue will dry immediately so you can keep working on your shoe.[10]

    • The heel will stick to the bottom of the shoe as soon as the contact glue touches, so make sure it’s lined up perfectly before pressing down.
  6. Trim the heel around the bottom of the shoe if it doesn’t lie flush. Hold the blade of a utility knife against the side of your shoe next to the new heel. If the heel overhangs the side of the shoe, guide the blade through the rubber around the curves of the heel. Trim as close as you can to the side of your shoe to ensure that the heel doesn’t hang out the side.[11]

    • Your knife can easily slip while trimming the heel, so work slowly and carefully so you don’t yourself.
  7. Secure the heel in place with cobbler nails. Cobbler nails are only long, but they help hold your heel in place so it doesn’t come off. Place a nail it each of the front corners of the heel and gently tap them into the bottom of the shoe. Then evenly space 3-5 more nails around the back curve of the heel to help secure it in place.[12]

    • You can buy cobbler nails at a hardware or shoe store.
    • You don’t have to nail down top lifts if you don’t want to, but it can make them more secure.

[Edit]Cleaning and Repairing the Material

  1. Clean scuffs off of leather with toothpaste. Apply a pea-sized shape of any non-gel toothpaste onto the corner of a cleaning rag. Rub the toothpaste in circular motions on the sides of the heel that have scuffs on them. If you still notice the scuffs after your first application, then use another pea-sized bead of toothpaste and repeat the process again. Continue working until you can’t see the scuff marks anymore.[13]

    • You may also use petroleum jelly in place of toothpaste if you want.
  2. Wipe rubber heels with nail polish remover to remove marks. Wet the corner of a cleaning rag with nail polish remover, and wring out any excess. Rub the heels of your shoes in a circular motion to help remove any scuff marks from the sides. If the marks don’t come out at first, wet the rag again and continue wiping until they’re clean.[14]

    • Avoid using an abrasive rag while you’re cleaning or else you may scratch and damage the rubber.
  3. Rub walnuts on a wooden heel to remove scuffs and scratches. Use unshelled walnuts since they’re easier to break apart and use on your shoes. Hold the walnut against the wood on your heel and apply light pressure while you rub back and forth. The oil from the nuts will help lift and remove any scuff marks and make the shoe appear clean and shiny. Continue rubbing walnuts into the heels until you don’t notice any more marks.[15]

    • Do not eat the walnuts you use to clean your shoes.
  4. Use liquid leather to fill in holes on a leather heel. Liquid leather matches the texture and look of real leather so you can hide tears or holes. Use a small applicator, such as a cotton swab or popsicle stick, to scoop out a small bead of liquid leather and spread it over the damaged area on your heel. Press the textured sheet provided with the liquid leather over the area and let it dry for 24 hours. Slowly peel the sheet off the liquid leather once it’s dry so you can wear your shoes again.[16]

    • You can buy liquid leather from a shoe or craft store.
    • Be sure to use liquid leather that matches the color of your heel so it doesn’t clash with the rest of your shoe.

[Edit]Tips

  • If your heel is loose, you may be able to use super glue to secure it back in place for a short time, though it will be weaker and more likely to break again.
  • If you don’t feel comfortable working on your own shoes, then take them to a professional cobbler so they can repair them for you.
  • You can also buy high heel tips that slide onto the ends of your heels if you need to repair them quickly.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Always wear safety glasses when using a belt sander.
  • Never touch the belt on a belt sander while it’s moving since it can cause serious injury.
