Oh no! Someone hid a bunch of treasures all over the place. How are you going to find them? Well, it just so happens those “treasures” are actually Circuit Playground Express boards that are sending out their location. So all we need to do is create a “hunter” Circuit Playground Express to sniff them out. Then the hunt is on!

In this all-new guide on the Adafruit Learning System, you’ll hunt treasure with Circuit Playground Express.

CPX IR

The tutorial also teaches you how to code the infrared (IR) sensors on the board, showing how to code this with both Microsoft MakeCode and CircuitPython.

Make yours today!

Spanish studios Nituniyo and Memosesmas teamed up to design this fun new installation in celebration of the Festival of the Fallas in Valencia.

Nice write-up from designboom.

the theme of the fallas is usually determined by the events that occurred during the past year,’ explains the nituniyo and memosesmas team. ‘currently, events seem to happen at a pace that makes it very difficult for us to assimilate and reflect on what is happening. how can a falla reflect this fact? the impossibility of being a reflection of the vertiginous and changing actuality? would it have to renounce the falla to have form? could it have a mutable form? we propose a falla that is able to adopt different forms, a kind of blank three-dimensional canvas that can be modified daily and be the support of the message that is desired in each moment.’

This is a serious Frankenstein’s monster: a DIY synth made of a 1981 Casio keyboard, an AM radio, stompboxes, and more – and held together with glue and tape.

Legowelt is somewhere between modding, circuit bending, and instrument design here, concocting a kind of wonky workstation of weirdness from the cannibalized bits of other stuff.

Essentially, it’s a Casio keyboard fed through a series of effects and circuit-bent circuitry, with a looper pedal thrown in and an AM radio as noise source.

More from Maestro Legowelt:

Enter the STAR SHEPHERD a synth I Build/bent/hacked/modified from old guitar pedals FX and EQ boxes, a small AM radio and a 1981 Casio 403 keyboard. The oscillator section is made out of Pitchshifter/Harmonizers/Sub Octavers and a graphic EQ pedal to create complex harmonic tones – transmorphed from the simple keyboard sounds fed by the Casio. The sound then goes through a bunch of circuitbend Analog delays, reverbs, Tremolos & Vibratos (figuring as makeshift LFO sources) and Wahwah pedals as filters. The AM radio is figuring as a random noise source. There is also a very simple keyboard style ‘sequencer’ made from a looper pedal.

This thing looks amazing on the outside – that solar array is a really impressive design! – and the internal guts are cleverly hidden the central PVC pipe, attached to watertight sensors for measuring turbidity, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Definitely an impressive project from the high school student-ran BCAMRL mechatronics research lab.

The world today is extremely dependent on the ocean, from sources of food to raw materials. However, recent studies show that an increase in pollution poses a danger to these large bodies of water. In order to aid the solving of this problem, we created an autonomous buoy that is able to collect a wide selection of data. Our buoy stays afloat in the ocean for extended periods of time and is entirely self-sufficient. It contains solar panels connected to an internal power module to provide power to run its electrical components. There is a turbidity sensor to measure the clearness and purity of surrounding water, which allows the determination of present contamination. There is also a pH sensor which provides data to keep track of the pH levels in the ocean, as a rising level of acidity in ocean water is harming biological ecosystems. A dissolved oxygen sensor connected as well, to further provide data for analysis. A GPS module allows this data to be transferred to a central monitor or receiving location to be analyzed and stored. The continuous power from the solar panels allows the buoy to stay in the water and provide a continuous updated stream of data. The data collected will provide information vital to the creation of a solution for this pressing issue. Acidity and purity levels are important factors in determining pollution levels, and more data will allow a better understanding of the problem in order to find the best solution.

The ocean is a key part of human life. It is a habitat for over 500,000 species of marine life and provides a source of income for communities. Ocean acidification, however, threatens all of this. CO2 dissolves into water producing carbonic acid, which harms many animals, like shellfish. This devastates local businesses and economies. Our buoy is a costeffective device to collect data on the ocean’s state in order to better understand the problem at hand.

One crux of mathematical content is the equation, and crucial to this is the equal sign. An equation like x = 5 tells us that the dreaded x, which represents some quantity, has the same value as 5. The number 5 and the value of x must be exactly the same.

A typical equal sign is very strict. Any small deviation from “exactly” means that two things are not equal. However, there are many times in life where two quantities are not exactly the same, but are essentially the same by some meaningful criteria.

Imagine, for example, that you have two square pillows. The first is red on top, yellow on the right, green on bottom and blue on the left. The second is yellow on the top, green on the right, blue on bottom, and red on the left.

The pillows aren’t exactly the same. One has a red top, while one has a yellow top. But they’re certainly similar. In fact, they would be exactly the same if you turned the pillow with the red top once counterclockwise.
